I know how this might sound when most if not all prayer request posted on this site are about people who face much more then I do on a daily basis, things that easily could cost them their lives or those of friends and family. I don't face such an extreme threat to life, only livlihood and my future. I am trying hard to find a job in the area I live with no luck so far. Its been about a month now and I thought I was hired at this one place for 14.75 an hour but the farther into the process I got the more I see its a scam and a lie. Its a commission sales job that has no guarentees and no hourly pay. The ad was a sham and the job a scam. To make matters worse I fell for it and have wasted a full week in pursuit of nothing. The story has changed constantly and I in the end I am nothing more than a glamourized door to door salesman. They at least make appointments for you. Its also selling a vacuum cleaner. At this point I feel I have no hope of getting a good job. I can't believe I fell into this job and now I need to get back out there to look again. I am getting married in little more then 3 months and you all will probably understand my urgency and feelings of fear in not having a job. There's no way I can get married without one. I have to be able to support my wife. I'm just asking for prayers to help me. I need the comfort that only God can give me. Any advice from more experienced Freepers are greatly appreciated too.
Thanks, Nick
BTW, you are in my prayers.
What is your background, and where do you live?
BTW I am praying for God to give you the strength, insight and wisdom to get through this very difficult time. I have been, (and soon expect to be...in fact I might be going to the job fair myself) in a similar situation.
Keep pressing on and you will make it!
Here's the info... sorry I can't clean up the html, but it should be readable.

Time: Wednesday March 19, 2003 10am - 3:30pm |
This event is being organized and produced by The Pittsburgh Employment Guide and Employmentguide.com, a division of Trader Publishing, in partnership with ClearChannel Communications, parent of six major Pittsburgh radio stations. “The goal of this event is to bring employers and job seekers together, all in one spectacular setting, Heinz field. This has never been done before in the Pittsburgh region to this scale”, reports Pete Denio, General Manager of the Employment Guide. “To our knowledge, this will be the largest general public career fair Pittsburgh has ever seen. With the troubles certain industries in our area have experienced since September 11th, here is an opportunity for displaced workers and those seeking something better than they currently have to meet face to face with Pittsburgh area employers.” |
Sounds silly. But it works!

A couple of quick tips on your job search:
- Ask your contacts at college for advice and contacts. Let your instructors and the job placement people know about your prior experience
- Broaden your search to include jobs you may not have considered. Many companies need computer-literate people in sales and administration jobs
- Make sure your resume emphasizes what you know and can do, your skill set, and not just where you worked. Bad resumes usually get this backwards
- Be persistient and believe in yourself. That attitude will shine through!
Best of luck, Nick. Let us know of your success.
Tony
My first thought is, "Oh? And how long have you lived in California?" (I'm a lifer -- so far.)
FWIW, in the first year of my marriage, I fell for a scam like that. A job that was looking for "managers," had a meeting in a hotel, had a slick presentation and high-powered guys, had all sorts of success stories -- gah, my cheeks are threatening to start burning as I write it. Anyway, it was just another MLM program, and I am SO not-put-together to succeed at such a thing.
But, God help me, I tried.
My point is we're all looking to get ahead, to do well, and that's what these groups and people sieze on. It's trite, but true: you live, and you learn. (Unless you're a Democrat; then you just live, and never learn.) My wife, God love her, was and has remained very merciful about it. She could have gotten a good decade's worth of ribbing, justly, but didn't.
So I learned. Now if I'm unsure, I would ask, "Is this a normal, salaried job? Are sales of any kind involved?" and questions like that.
Unfortunately, while you can benefit from the experience of others, some of it you just have to get for yourself. Hang in there, keep looking. Everyone who has a job was looking for one before he got hired.
