Elizabeth Smart who vanished from Utah home found safe
Seattle Times ^ | March 12, 2003 | Mike Carter

Posted on 03/12/2003 8:01:09 PM PST by Shermy

Elizabeth Smart, the 15-year-old Salt Lake City girl kidnapped from her home last June, had been held in a polygamous relationship by a man who believed God had told him to take her as another wife.

Police sources in Utah, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the man had kidnapped the girl more than 8 months ago and she was living with him and at least one other woman in a house in suburban Sandy, Utah, about 20 miles south of the girl’s home.

The girl was found alive — against all hope — in a car stopped by police.

“Miracles do exist,” said the girl's uncle, Tom Smart. He said the girl was in good condition.

Elizabeth was wearing a wig when police in Sandy pulled over the drifter, a man known as Emmanuel, authorities said. She was taken to the Salt Lake City police department, where her family was with her.

Brian David Mitchell

The man, whose real name is Brian David Mitchell, had worked “for about five hours” at the girl’s parents' luxurious home in the foothills near the state Capitol more than a year earlier, the source said. Police say he had become enamored of the girl at that time and prayed about taking her as another wife.

“It was a religious thing,” the source said. “This guy just wanted another wife and God told him this was the one.”

A month ago, the Smarts held a news conference where they released a sketch of Mitchell, who did work at their home in November 2001. As recently as yesterday, the family openly criticized police for not devoting enough attention to the former handyman.

Mitchell’s sister called authorities with his identity after the family’s Feb. 3 news conference. The man’s stepson gave investigators photos of Mitchell and said his stepfather was “capable” of kidnapping a child.

He also said Mitchell believes he is a prophet who needs to preach to the homeless and has no source of income other than handouts.

On the night of June 5, 2002, a man cut the screen in the girl’s bedroom window and climbed inside. Armed with a handgun, he took the child from her bed while her little sister, Mary Katherine, witnessed the kidnapping. The sister, afraid the man was still in the house, laid in bed for several hours before waking her parents and reporting the kidnapping.

Last month, Elizabeth’s younger sister was re-interviewed by detectives and told them that the man who broke into the bedroom that night resembled the man she knew as Emmanuel. Elizabeth Smart’s parents issued a new reward and released a sketch of the man.

Until then, police were disheartened over the disappearance. Their main suspect, a convicted burglar named Richard Albert Ricci, had died in prison of a brain hemorrhage last August. He had steadfastly denied any role in kidnapping the girl.

Investigators have said they believe Ricci was involved but may not have acted alone.

“They should have caught this guy by now,” said Tom Smart. “The police are too vested in Ricci.”

Elizabeth’s father, Ed, was less harsh but expressed his “frustration” at public statements made by police dismissing Mitchell as a potential suspect.

Police said they followed up more than 16,000 leads from the public in addition to those they came up with themselves.

Children’s advocates were elated by the good news.

“We are very, very relieved,” said Marilyn Ward, director of Child Search, a national missing children center based in Houston. “This should help the cause of missing children everywhere. We are thankful she’s alive. It gives hope to people to never give up.”

You see first it was reported that he called his brother first, then his neighbors who are LDS, then the police. The police finally came out with the timeline that said he had called them first and his brother and neighbors after that. The police were called first!!

Not so "chunky" as others have suggested.

I'm trying to decide if you are truly interested or an agitator. I haven't totally decided yet.

First, answer me this question: why do Catholic Priests wear their black suits and their collars?

Or, why do some Baptist or Methodist preachers wear robes when they do their sacrament services?

"Garments" or as you put it "underwear" are just that. They are worn under your clothes. You wouldn't know if someone had them on or not.

They are representative of a personal covenant between the wearer and God. There is no one in between those two.

Temple clothing on the other hand is something entirely different and is never worn outside of the Temple. Period. If a person were to run around the streets in Temple clothing they would run about a 95% chance or better of being excommunicated for apostasy. And everyone knows it. There would be no need whatsoever to call anyone to know that.

Well folks we have a fast moving bad storm coming in with tornado warnings. I will probably log off soon, so I won't be looking for new updates on this wonderful story.

Nope. No denial at all.

I am saying the posters on this thread are very ignorant of them, Mormons, Temples, Temple clothing, and the differences between all of those, etc.

You are exhibiting that you are no exception.

I'm wondering if these women also got suspicious partly because of the times. The 'war on terror' is in full swing; it's no wonder people got a bit suspicious. Seeing people dressed this way makes a lot of people uneasy. Not that Muslims or people dressed in this manner are all suspicious or questionable people, but people are just uneasy. Unfortunate and unfair at times true, but understandable!

In this case, it was sure a good thing people are naturally suspicious now, because of what we are fighting in the world as a whole. In this case, a missing child is found, because of someone being curious, cautious, and questioning something unusual!

This man sure wasn't paying much attention to what is going on. He probably wouldn't have invited curiousity, if he had merely had her hair dyed, and fixed in a completely different manner than the way she wore it.

If a person were to run around the streets in Temple clothing they would run about a 95% chance or better of being excommunicated for apostasy.

BUT THIS GUY WAS NOT A MORMON! Just some crazy who maybe had his own Ideas and interpretations of the Book of Mormon. No different than any of the other sects that have been condemned and rejected by the church.

He is a nut and his actions are no reflection on the LDS!

There is no cryptic response.

You are posting a bunch of stuff on the internet that you know nothing about. For those who are remotely knowledgeable its crystal clear.

Guilty as charged but I'm ignorant about a lot of things. Would love some insight and patience rather than name calling.

The more you go on and on about temple garments, makes me think that the real issue is not the garments, but what people think of those garments and the people who wear them. I don't get the big issue with what he was wearing. Why not a clown suit, or a wet suit for that matter? What is the big deal?
