Here, my bet is that Ms. Jernigan is of the white race persuasion. The basic reason is that no left wing media outlet would dare report that a 24 year old black female had had sex with 200 men.

Alleged patient abuse

A patient at the Northeast Florida State Hospital, Melissa Jernigan, 24, removed her brassiere, tied it around her neck, and attempted to strangle herself on September 7. Sharon Brown, 44, of Lawtey and June Pace, 32, of Sanderson both employees of the state hospital at the time, were present and made no effort to help Jernigan.

Deputy James Nickels was present when Gary Hopson of Department of Children and Families Adult Care Division investigated the incident for elderly abuse and neglect on December 18.

Hopson stated that another employee saw Jernigan in distress and contacted the nurse who assisted Jernigan. He also learned that Brown and Pace had been fired since the incident.

According to a new U.N. report, more than 5 million people worldwide contracted the AIDS virus in 2002, bringing the total number of those infected to 42 million, up 2 million from a year ago. Of those who died from HIV/AIDS, 610,000 were younger than 15, and almost half were women

There is something wrong in this story.

She might have exposed 200 people to HIV, but I doubt all 200 of them got the virus

For her to transmit the virus, she would have to have sex over 200,000 times by the law of averages. I believe the transmission rate is nearly 1,000 sexual encounters with a female, for one male to be infected. Stupid law, discourages people from being tested. It doesn't stop them from spreading it. She'll probably go to prison, live 45 more years, while those she "supposedly infected", die in 10.

I find it hard to believe that she transmitted it to 200 men. The odds of getting it through hetero sex are pretty low.

Such calls for a literary solution. If convicted of spreading HIV she should have a Scarlet Letter "A" tattooed where it can be seen only when she's trying to spread it further. It can't lead to discrimination as only health care personnel or sex partners can legally see it and they need to know it.

JACKSONVILLE, Fl (AP) -- A Jacksonville woman is facing charges that she criminally transmitted the HIV virus to at least 200 unprotected partners. Melissa Jernigan told police she tested positive for the virus in 1999 and continued to have unprotected sex.

It is a third-degree felony in Florida, punishable by five years in prison, for an HIV-positive person to have sex with a partner but not first informing them about the diagnosis of the virus. Sergeant HR Atkinson of the Duval County Sheriff's Office sex crimes unit told the Florida Times-Union this crime is comparable to attempted murder.

Jernigan was being held Friday at the John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Jacksonville. It could not be immediately determined if she had obtained an attorney.

I'll do the math here.

My source is:

http://www.ama-assn.org/special/womh/library/scan/vol_3/no_17/aje.htm

The Journal of American Medicine Association (JAMA) is the premeir trade journal of the entire medical world. Their standards are very strict, and not many people get published there, but many try. Multiple peer review by statisticians, and leading physicians in their field in the world. It is considered Gospel in the medical world.

That said, the article summary I linked says that the heterosexual transmission rate of HIV from women to men is .0009 x .125 (one eigth), or roughly 1 in 10,000 tries. For the average HIV infected woman to infect 200 men, she would have to have sex 2,000,000 times. Yes, TWO MILLION TIMES!!!

The article also says that other STD's (as in, gonorhea, etc.) are the largest indicator of transmission.

Bottom line: It is virtually impossible for an otherwise healthy (No other STD's) women to infect a man with HIV.

Don't like the numbers? Argue with JAMA; good luck, and have fun. I'm just the translator. :)

Heterosexual AIDS through sex is a myth.

I would agree, 5 years sounds like a wrist slap for killing 200 people. Ted Bundy should have been so lucky.

It's just such a shame that people can't all have a spouse and be married, monogamous and faithful.

Then we wouldn't have these problems.
