Fla. Woman Charged With Transmitting HIV To 200 Partners
Posted: 8:05 a.m. EST March 8, 2003 Updated: 9:36 a.m. EST March 9, 2003
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville woman is facing charges that she criminally transmitted the HIV virus to at least 200 unprotected parters. Melissa Jernigan, 24, told police that she tested positive for the virus in 1999 and continued to have unprotected sex.
It is a third-degree felony in Florida, punishable by five years in prison, for an HIV-positive person to have sex with a partner but not first informing them about the diagnosis of the virus.
"This crime is actually in the area of attempted murder," Sgt. H.R. Atkinson of the Duval County Sheriff's Office sex crimes unit told the Florida Times-Union for its Saturday editions.
Jernigan was being held Friday at the John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Jacksonville. It could not be immediately determined if she had obtained an attorney.

I'll do the math here.
My source is:

The Journal of American Medicine Association (JAMA) is the premeir trade journal of the entire medical world. Their standards are very strict, and not many people get published there, but many try. Multiple peer review by statisticians, and leading physicians in their field in the world. It is considered Gospel in the medical world.
That said, the article summary I linked says that the heterosexual transmission rate of HIV from women to men is .0009 x .125 (one eigth), or roughly 1 in 10,000 tries. For the average HIV infected woman to infect 200 men, she would have to have sex 2,000,000 times. Yes, TWO MILLION TIMES!!!
The article also says that other STD's (as in, gonorhea, etc.) are the largest indicator of transmission.
Bottom line: It is virtually impossible for an otherwise healthy (No other STD's) women to infect a man with HIV.
Don't like the numbers? Argue with JAMA; good luck, and have fun. I'm just the translator. :)
Heterosexual AIDS through sex is a myth.

The rate of male-to-female transmission was not significantly different from the rate of female-to-male transmission (12.0 per 100 person-years vs. 11.6 per 100 person-years).
Conclusions: The viral load is the chief predictor of the risk of heterosexual transmission of HIV-1, and transmission is rare among persons with levels of less than 1500 copies/mL of HIV-1 RNA.

That's a female?

200 partners in four years? I think she is a prositute. If 200 is all she could do in 4 years, she isn't a very successful prostitute.

>>Actually, js is correct. It is rare for a hetorosexual man to get HIV from a woman.<<....So, you are saying the millions of people suffering from aids in Africa got it from gay sex?

There are a lot of "fun girls" out there and they couldn't be any girls you know right! I personally know a minister's wife who was giving strangers blowjobs in Holiday Inns when she was 15-16. Not that you would know it now from listening to her rant and rave about "how these young girls act today". Of course, she doesn't say this around me for some reason.

It is unusual for men to get Aids from women. More common the other way round. What is going on here??? Whats the difference? I didnt realize transmission varied by gender.

js is right...I have seen this analysis from a Blood Center in the midwest. For obvious reasons, they need to understand very well, how HIV is transmitted.....which means the kind of sex they are having in African is not "normal" stuff......my guess is anal penetration is involved......better liklihood of blood sharing due to friction and abrasion....sorry for the graphic nature, but the African thing is not well published since the major media are interested in advancing a cause rather than telling the ENTIRE story.

A lot of 24 year old women have been having sex with 5 or 10 men almost daily since they were 14 or 15. No need to actually document the 200+ figure. A lot? You're going to have to define that; I suppose "a lot" of prostitutes might post those numbers, but that certainly isn't a lot of the general population.

Would YOU have sex with a woman (assuming that you are a guy, of course) who has AIDS? Would YOU take that chance? I still can't understand why men would have sex with women with a condom on ......
Sam Kinnison (God rest his soul) summed it up perfectly if a bit profanely (*'s for the little kids reading)

which means the kind of sex they are having in African is not "normal" stuff IIRC the women over there have herbal extracts they use because the men HATE wet genitals and prefer to have sex with dry women. Sick but true.

"So, you are saying the millions of people suffering from aids in Africa got it from gay sex?" Actually, the UN re-defined what AIDS is, to include just about everything that leads to life-threatening infection. Under current UN guidelines, you don't have to have HIV to be classified as an AIDS patient. You can have tuberculosis, and be classified as an AIDS patient.
The UN redefined the definition of AIDS. They call people with no HIV AIDS patients.
Why? The money.
That said, YES I call most of them with true AIDS gay men. There are only four transmission routes, in order: Gay men with gay men, Gay men with others, IV sharing people; people with other STD's (open sores in the genitals). The rest of us have a better chance winning the lottery.

I wouldn't do it even if "protected." It may or may not work.Looking at her picture, I don't think the protection of a blindfold would work either.

"This crime is actually in the area of attempted murder,"
I would agree, 5 years sounds like a wrist slap for killing 200 people. Ted Bundy should have been so lucky.
It's just such a shame that people can't all have a spouse and be married, monogamous and faithful.
Then we wouldn't have these problems.
