Say X is the first digit and Y is the second digit and the number is N.

N=10X+Y-(X+Y)=9X

so the first digit times 9 will be your number. They keep changing all the symbols which are multiples of 9 to the same thing, so whatever number you chose the the symbol for multiples of 9 will be the same.

No rocket science here, just plain algebra, move along.

What is the rule of nine?

I know this as the nines remainder. When you subract the sum of the digits, what you have left is a multiple of 9. All multiples of 9 have the cross as its symbol. No matter what number you start with, you will always be looking for and getting a cross.

Basically every two digit number comes out to a multiple of 9 when you subtract from it the total of the two digits. If you study the graph, you will see that every multiple of nine (9,18,27,36...) has the same symbol next to it. So no matter what two-digit number you pick, the end result will be a multiple of nine (after the subtraction).

This works for three-digit and four-digit numbers too (and so on).

You've almost got it. Just keep hitting the ball and watch the symbol next to the same number, say zero or 9 or 18. Then it will dawn on you.
