Missing girl hunted here 'Amber Alert' triggered when pair is recognized at Grass Valley motel
John Dickey
A nationwide search turned to Grass Valley Thursday as law enforcement officers scoured the area for a 14-year-old Michigan girl who reportedly was abducted by a convicted killer.
Lindsey Ryan disappeared from her parents' Jones, Mich., home early Saturday with 56-year-old Terry Drake. Ryan reportedly took guns, ammunition and $4,000 in cash.
Officials received a tip that the pair might be heading for Grass Valley and, in fact, Ryan and Drake checked into the Best Western Gold County Inn on Sutton Way on Tuesday.
A "Technology to Recover Abducted Kids" alert Wednesday by the California Highway Patrol was picked up by Central Valley television stations, prompting employees at the Best Western who saw the broadcasts Wednesday night to contact Ryan's family about the pair's brief appearance at their motel.
Employees at the motel would not discuss the matter with The Union.

Authorities said the employees were suspicious about the combination of a 56-year-old man checking into a single-bed room with a young girl. Ryan and Drake had arrived at the motel in the Glenbrook Basin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, but reportedly left an hour later.
It wasn't until Thursday that the hunt took a darker, more desperate turn with the decision that Ryan, a home-schooled youth from a rural area, was reportedly abducted by Drake, a convicted killer and kidnapper who was paroled after serving time. Ryan met Drake at church, and chatted with him on the Internet. It was then that an "Amber Alert" was issued.
With that information, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, the California Highway Patrol, the FBI and Sierra County Sheriffs Office scoured Nevada County campgrounds and hotels Thursday by road and by air, and also searched in Sierra County into the Downieville area, where the two were thought to have headed to camp.
Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal said his office received a number of phone tips Thursday about people who were seen who were believed to match Drake's and Ryan's descriptions. All turned out to be unfounded.
Royal said he didn't know if the two were still in the area.
The Nevada County Sheriff's office received a report Thursday at 11:22 a.m. claiming that a white truck matching the suspect's description was parked on a dirt turnout near Gracie and Banner Mountain roads. Deputies responded, but found a vehicle that didn't match the description.
After a search by air and road failed to find the two in Nevada or Sierra counties, law enforcement continued the search late Thursday throughout Northern California.
