Ah, a George W. Bush and a poker metaphor. I remember way way back, before anyone thought Bush had a chance at the presidency I used to say here "never play poker with him". You will lose. But you will still like him after he takes your wallet. He will leave you smiling then you will come back again only to be beat again.
Over the years Bush has outplayed so many people. Ann Richards, the Dems., the media, Gore, Lieberman, etc. etc. Gosh, I remember when he outplayed people so well the best they could do was call him "stupid". As if all "W's" luck was dumb luck.
Want to know what I saw tonight? As a Texan that has watched Bush for many years? I saw a man that is several "hands" ahead, who stopped the very serious "game" for a second to talk to people that can't see the "game", and could never play it. But what can you expect from "reporters", they can't figure out their own job much less the presidents.
"W" was born for this game. But dammit, I wish he and Laura and all these rest of us never saw these cards dealt. George W. Bush was not supposed to be here. Not in this time, doing what he is doing. Playing this poker hand for us all. It should have been different. Maybe he just could have brought respect and dignity back to the White House. Things like that. Less serious stuff. But he has this hand to play instead.
Imagine Clinton playing this card game for us. No thanks. Or Al Gore. I'll pass. Or anyone here posting tonight? Sorry, I'll let Cool Hand George run this game. Why? Look over his shoulder. See back there behind him? His past? He has not lost a game yet. And he won't lose this one.
Best George W. Bush quote I've ever heard -- I wish I knew the source:
"He's got all the confidence of a Christian holding four aces in his hand."
Yes, yes, yes, and yes.
