I really fear for the consequences of his performance tonight. This is not the time to come out and bag it like he's doing. He looks exhausted - the whole thing seems rambling and weird. There was no reason for him to have a press conference tonight. I'm perplexed by Rove's reasoning - I assume this was his idea.

I find his tone to be quite reassuring. His somberness fits the mood and the times.

"Texas eyes"...great expression.

"I make my decisions based on the oath I took."

He's doing this for the press. A senior postal inspector suggested shortly after 9-11 (and the press putting Union workers on TV to condemn the administration re. the anthrax attack) that we bomb the NY Times first. We didn't elect these partisan hacks.

Guess I am too, because I haven't heard an explanation as to why we have to invade Iraq, when we DON'T have to invade N Korea

The War on Terror is why. There's 3 elements to our enemies, soldiers, suppliers, and financiers. Al Queda is an example of a soldier...they are out there doing. The financiers mostly raise funds here in America, and they were mostly uprooted in 2001. Iraq is an example of a supplier. There are three nations that produce weaponized Anthrax, US, Russia, and Iraq. Only one is run by a murderous tyrant.

The removal of Saddam constitutes an attack at a huge potential supplier of the enemies of America.

Now it's your turn to say "I still don't see the need to attack Iraq right now..."

>>>I don't see any other thing that distinguishes the Iraq situation from the N Korean situation - - except the oil, that is. Maybe it IS really about the oil!

Then you haven't been paying attention. Oil is only one part of the equation.

The President will tackle the RNK, when the time is right.

I'm not surprised - because nobody can explain it.

Read #792, and look up the population of Seoul - including Americans.

Let me spell it out for you. North Korea is a mad dog that has nukes.

Au contraire, we're concerned that they might DEVELOP a nuclear weapon with the capacity they've developed. Why shouldn't we move in and stop them? Apparently we think Iraq is more worthy of an invasion and regime change - - but WHY? Oil? The book of revelation? WHy?

He needs to give as many warnings as possible in these last day before the war, IMO. (Even if they sound boring to Freepers.)

Then the liberals will not be able to say there was a rush to war.

It's just that there is no talk that will satisfy at this point. Talk has gotten us into this long slow snail's crawl to war (maybe to war, maybe to whatever). Bush is doing the commonly accepted political thing: Repeating over and over and over (ad nauseum to us) the same points, the same phrases. It's because that's the standard means for politicians to get people's attention and focus a very distracted population.

I don't necessarily think they're all that distracted (except maybe by Bush's internal enemies who are taking great advantage and spirit from the seeming reluctance to actually act.

But this is the way of politics in these latter days. Those of us who are always tuned in can be forgiven, I think, for getting annoyed with the inanity of all the repitition. I guess there's a reason for it. But it sure does make these "events" boring as hell.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

"Again, I think it's because North Korea doesn't have oil"

Wow, another "all about oil" sheeple. If it's all about oil, why didn't we stay there in '91?

>> haven't heard an explanation as to why we have to invade Iraq, when we DON'T have to invade N Korea

Taking out Iraq is a fight we can *WIN*, even in the court of world opinion, where 15 dead civilians are worse than millions imprisoned, or threatened.

There is nothing we can do about NK right now, and everybody knows it. Entering negotiations without a credible threat will result in us either 1) giving away the farm, or 2) a 6-week war with nuclear weapons in which >10 million S. Koreans and maybe Japanese die.

I am convinced that war is coming, and the cynical position is to let the NK start it, millions of SKs die, and then we swoop in and destroy the NK regime. Better it happens 8 weeks from now than tomorrow.

Bottom line: NK has nukes. Can kill millions. Iraq can't hit Israel, Kuwait, Saudi, or anybody.
