[history]
Watch your mailbox -- and pray you haven't been chosen.
Internal Revenue Service officials have begun sending letters to taxpayers chosen largely at random for special audits later this year and next year. These audits, the first of their kind in more than a decade, are designed to give agents a fresh look at how much cheating exists, what types, how to spot it and how to reduce unnecessary audits in the future.

An acquaintence of mine learned some lessons the hard way. He became an AMWAY dealer because he'd been led to believe that he could write off a bunch of things like a home office, car, etc. IRS won of course. He points out that if you are summoned to talk about a particular item on your return, only take information pertinent to that particular item and only talk about that.

Good advice. That's one thing they never tell you about the joys of being self employed, it throws up an automatic flag for further scrutiny.

Citizens living in a FRee Republic ought not be forced to endure the tyranny of this insanity.
I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. [Thomas Jefferson, letter to Benjamin Rush, 1800.]

I will repeat my oft-repeated suggestion. By all means, let's bring back the Audit From Hell -- as long as we start, every year, with every Member of Congress, every likely congressional candidate, and all senior congressional staff even remotely involved with tax policy. We should subject these people to an annual AFH until they give us a simple, clean tax code.

P.S. Karl, if you're lurking you are welcome to the above suggestion. It would be worth 15% in the polls and an automatic reelect for W.
Plus I'm willing to bet we'd be sending more dems to jail than pubbies.
