On clinton's missus' war oscillations...
Mr. Tyrrell's analysis of clinton's missus' war oscillations misses--if not the fulcrum--certainly the point.
While the argument doesn't confuse "necessary" with "sufficient, it mixes up "variable" with "constant" and "candidate" with "opportunistic, cowardly thug," and it fails completely to address the significance of the complementary move to demagogue homeland security.
Equally important, Tyrrell's analysis ignores hillary clinton's national unelectability, an intractable condition that was rendered incurable by 9/11 (It was the TERRORISM, stupid.)
To say that hillary clinton is 'polarizing' doesn't begin to capture the depth of the hate and completely overlooks the range.
clinton is despised not only by the right and the less middling 'middle,' but by a significant segment of the left, women included. Recall Fran Lebowitz's scathing comments made during the senate campaign. On the left, Hitchens has put it best.
The range and depth of the hate were quantified recently by a Marist Institute poll. 69% of voters nationwide don't want to see this woman run, EVER. No amount of spin can move those numbers, Oh, we will see the usual clinton-infrastructure manipulation, but no movement in the real world.
The people HATE her. It's that simple.
The manifest unelectability of hillary clinton exposes the real electoral problem--which is--that both clintons always were, and are to this day, reflexive--some would even say perpetual--runners

Finally, it is instructive to note that the wife's unimaginative war oscillations are really nothing more than a reprise of the unimaginative oscillating presidency of the husband.

hillary clinton Covertly Hedges Her Bets on the War While Overtly Betting Everything on the Virtual Certainty--Another Terrorist Attack
by Mia T, 2.28.03
Just as it is not surprising that hillary clinton would covertly hedge her bets on the war, it is not surprising that she would bash Bush on homeland security openly, loudly and often.
Both logic and empirical evidence inform us that perfect homeland security is unattainable, especially post-9/11 in a country undermined by left-wing theater and a clintonized democratic party. The Bush Administration and terrorism experts tell us that another terrorist attack is a virtual certainty.
Thus, we have hillary clinton bashing Bush on homeland security openly, loudly and often. Vulnerability will always smoke out the opportunistic, cowardly thug.
