He is an alumnus of Princeton University and former Naval aviator who first went to Washington, DC, in 1957 to serve as administrative assistant to a congressman. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois in 1962 and was re-elected in 1964, 1966 and 1968. He resigned from Congress in 1969 to serve in the Nixon administration. He served as U.S. Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels, Belgium, for a year before returning to Washington in 1974 to serve in the Ford administration. Under Ford, he was named the 13th secretary of defense, the youngest person to serve in that position in this country’s history.

You were a GIB in Viggies? E-2? S-3? A-3?

Those are the only carrier A/C I can think of that "afford" the GIBs no forward vision. Well, the C-1A, but bloters in the COD don't count. LOL!

I only had two bolters (365 "traps") -- both in CQ, and both caused by a "nervous" IP who couldn't keep his hands off the wheel.

After my OinC caused my first (and only!) night bolter, I told him that if he wanted to land the damn airplane, just let me know, and I'd let him land it!

He let me alone after that. Fortunately, he was a Fraternity Brother, and took no offense at a "wet behind the ears" JG barking at a LCDR!

Bow-chicka-bow-bow....

Did you get that from the old Commodores song? If so, does that mean Rummy is a "brick house" (whatever that means?)

"he's mighty, mighty, he's letting it all hang out" (embarrassed I know the words to that song)

He publicly sought the vice-presidential nomination in 1980 and briefly ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1988 against the George Bush 41, before dropping out and backing former Bob Dole for the job. He was also Dole’s campaign chairman in his failed 1996 presidential bid against Bill Clinton.
