National Anthem Project

Dear Gail,

Mike Fleming at WREC 600 am in Memphis suggested I forward information to you regarding our project. We are making a last ditch effort to bring more radio stations on board so any pressure you can bring to bear, we appreciate the help!

February 28, 2003

National Anthem Project

We have asked local radio stations to show America’s support of our Armed Forces by playing the National Anthem simultaneously with radios stations through out the United States on Wednesday, March 5th 11:00 am EST.

Hello from Carole in Savannah, GA!

I am the Regional Coordinator for the states of GA, SC, NC, TN, and KY.

I am making a final plea for your help and support. I also want to let you know that we want to hear about your level of paritcipation with the National Anthem Project and every organization is being relayed to the troops.

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of e-mails, faxes, phone calls, letters, radio interviews and even TV interviews. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this project would be so incredibly successful. We have over 40 states with radio and TV support! With only a few short days left to prepare, it is now even more important that we continue to "get the word out". While we have the commitment of hundreds of radio stations through out the United States who will be playing the National Anthem during our simulcast, we still have hundreds more that haven't heard of it yet.

That's where I am asking for your help.

Please contact your local radio stations and ask them to play the National Anthem. Radio stations that are participating in any way, please e-mail me your call letters and station ID so that it can be included on the listings going to the troops.

Call your mayor and ask if he/she is going to support this effort. We have several mayors who have declared March 5th - Support our Troops Day! Each governmental agency issuing a statement of support or a proclamation, please e-mail me a copy and I will return your e-mail with the mailing address so that your document can be forwarded to the troops.

Many newspapers will be running copies of the US flag to display. Thousands of schools will pause after the Pledge of Allegiance to sing along with radio stations. Churches will be ringing their bells! Fire Stations will be pausing to reflect. Organizations are planning mass gatherings of everyday people singing loud and strong! We want to hear about what you are doing so send us an e-mail with the details of how you will be participating and we will insure the troops know!

Arrangements have been made with Radio Kuwait to allow our Armed Forces to hear this simulcast LIVE in the Middle East and on board the many ships that have been away from home for so very long. Our Armed Forces are aware of our project and we are getting dozens of e-mails every day thanking us and telling us how much it means to them.

Friends, we have over 200,000 men and women over 8000 miles away from home right now in scarey and uncertain times. They have missed important holidays, birthdays and family events. The very least we can do is to let our collective voices be heard in honoring their commitment to their duties and their country.

If you need any information regarding this project, please feel free to call me at (912) 352-3752 or you may contact our National Coordinator, Jerri Haaven-Pester at (480) 614-0329. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and thank you for any effort you can make in helping to make the National Anthem Project successful.

With gratitude from a proud Marine girlfriend, Carole Gibson

What a fantastic idea!!!! I wish I'd been able to hear about it sooner! It's too late for me to contact anyone now.

What I will do, though, is send this in e-mails to my pen pals serving overseas so they'll know it's happening. They love hearing about the different ways Americans are getting out there to show support. This one is awesome!!

I hope you each got to hear it. It was on 7 stations here in Savannah, GA. I was absolutely in tears. Most stations went above and beyond giving a good explanation as to why it was being played and followed it with Lee Greewood and Darrell Worley. For about 5 minutes strong, the focus was the troops. How cool is that?

Please do let me know where you heard it and I will post it to the forum message boards we have for the troops to see!!!!

Thank you all for your support. We have been asked to consider doing this again and I think it most likely will be and I will give y'all plenty of lead time now that I know where to find you! LOL!

620 WTMJ Milwaukee Wisconsin played it. With a full explanation. I too was in tears.
They have been behind the troops 100%, in fact I am attaching a link to their website. They are sponsoring a petition "IN OUR NAMES" that they are collecting signatures for to send to the troops, the President, Congress (house and Senate) voicing our support. Please sign and pass it along to everyone you know.
In five days alone they have over 30,000 signatures on line. They also have boxes and boxes (several hundred) of petitions that people have printed off and got signatures from people outside of the internet.
Thanks for your support, and you service.

Just wanted to let y'all know that Jerri the National Coordinator of the National Anthem Project wrote a letter to CNN/MSNBC today. It went as follows:

"Shame on CNN.

High school protestors make headline news, but a coordinated effort to have the National Anthem played on radio stations across America simultaneously this morning at 1100 EST, did not.

More than 1500 radio stations, in all fifty states, and 173 countries chose to take time out of their regular programming to honor our armed forces, and it wasn't worthy of your attention.

A divided nation came together for a few minutes to remember the sacrifice of our loved ones who are deployed in hostile regions, and it wasn't important.

Your message is crystal clear."
