We should send the troops sitting in the Mediterranean through the Suez canal, down the Red Sea and up into the Persian Gulf. Forget about going through Turkey, they had their chance.

I'm beginning to wonder if we have something much larger in mind than just Saddam.

For purposes of comparison, how many troops were deployed by the U.S., and by our allies, for Gulf War I?

Starting to look that way.

Hmmm. Why would we put 300,000 guys in the Gulf? That's far more than we need for Iraq.
However, First Cav should get in theater just in time for Third I.D. to be redeployed elsewhere after Baghdad falls. Korea, perhaps?

I think the U.S. had something like 550,000 personnel in theater for Desert Storm. Not sure about our allies, other than the 35,000 or so the Brits sent.

Yes, a total re-write of Middle Eastern Regimes.
An act of war was committed against us.
So many forget that fact.
They are ALL filthy into it, IRan, Saudi, Syria....and on.
What we have here, is a reckoning.

I agree, might as well do Saudi and Iran while we're in there.

We should get our stuff out of Turkey poste haste....I think thet're planning their own take-over of the Kurds....we don't need1,000 tanks APC's and vehicles to be held hostage in Iskendriya or whatever that port is.
To: pierrem15
This could be a little insurance in case the Brits back out at the last minute because of Security Council problems.

The final Mid-Feb 1991 figure for U.S. personnel in the Gulf I'm finding is 540,000. Some 205,000 allied troops were also in theater.
That 540,000 figure is almost exactly equal to the U.S. peak troop deployment in Vietnam.
