Actually the debate over the relationship between pacifism and defense, and between the ancient Japanese warrior ideal and the modern Japanese pacifist ideal, has been simmering in Japan for a long time.

It is one of the main themes in Japanese popular culture. It is the central idea driving the plot of the anime series Gundam Wing and one of the core ideas in two of the most popular anime series of the 1990's: Escaflowne and Neon Genesis Evangelion (although the later is more about alienation and the human condition generally).

The Nattion of Japan will use this North Korean provocation to openly disclose nuclear arms at some point; the real danger is China whose diplomatic support of N.Korea has enabled the hermit kingdom to flex its ugly head. China has been make the same noise for several years. China will have to face nuclear arms in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and the USA if it attacks any one of these four nations....

Hey Japan, why not do a surprise attack on their unsuspecting Naval Fleet some Sunday morning?

"If North Korea gets nuclear weapons, the stance of Japan and our country toward nuclear weapons could change," he (South Korea's outgoing president Kim Dae-jung) said on February 18, advising Pyongyang not to "even dream of getting nuclear weapons".

Sorry pal, but the dreaming part is over. NK has nukes and you'd better wake up to the fact.

Shhhh. The left would have us believe that we are the in this fight alone and that North Korea is out to get us (U.S.) alone.

Of course Japan has been saying that they will strike out at Korea if the threat of an attack seems imminent.

If Japan decided to develop nukes today, it would only take a few months to field a very effective nuclear deterrent force, complete with ICBMs.
