By most local accounts he's a decent guy. He actively participated in Christian-based memorial services (including at St. John's Cathedral) right after September 11th, and it was his mosque that the idiot drove his car into.
The local media has had a burr up his butt about him for quite some time, I doubt there is much of anything to the "links" beyond them scratching said burr and looking for a local angle.

Someone went into his mosque with a videotape and and recorded him calling for the death of Jews and Christians - before 9/11. He lied about it, denied it, and then when the tape was played nightly and people started asking when he was going to be thrown out, he decided to step aside.
The "idiot" that plowed into the mosque will probably do more time than this madman.
I've said it before, and I will say it again - The troika for terrorism comes in through Canada and nests in Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo. You want to catch these filthy pigs, then start there.

Although they privately hate all other faiths, as well as less extreme and puritanical forms of Islam, islamists in America very often participate in ecumenical activities. I provides them an oportunity to gain prestige and legitimacy from stupid and trusting Christians and Jews that they often cannot acheive within the Muslim community (which knows they are hate-filled radicals).

They play the game, they're not stupid, they don't walk around with shirts that say "I support terrorists". I'm not saying that I know for sure this guy is involved, but for the time being I'm not trusting any Muslims no matter how friendly they seem. Their religion tells them to lie to us.
