France (and England) refused to help Poland when the German Nazis invaded despite a treaty between the three. Why should anyone expect them to help anyone else?

You forgot one "little" detail. The 1939 invasion of Poland was a joint Nazi-Soviet operation.

that may be so, but treaties are meant to be honored, not decided afterwards that they are inconvenient
