Many thanks to this good man. The Brits have always been worthy friends, unlike the ingrate French.

I, James Black, a man whose grandfather fought in both World Wars, and had the good humor to suggest that the Americans were late for both events, but the sense to point out they ensured victory when they finally did show up, make my first vow.

Amen:

Whether he realizes it or not, this man has just become part of history. His beautiful letter will be read by millions of Americans who will read this with tears in their eyes and it will be brought out frequently to remind people of the greatness and steadiness of the Brits.

We didn't save Britain. We helped Britain save herself. But the appreciation is appreciated.

You quirky mix of 280 million misfits that have somehow blended...this is wrong, the mix has to be filtered and sterilized before it can be blended.

Let's do ourselves a favor and at the same time one for Mr. Black's presentation of a fine letter, with the number of FreeRepublic members out there we should be able to get Mr. Black's letter in every Newspaper in the Nation. Then we all can sound off when our local paper runs it. We may want to Introduce Mr. Black to FreeRepublic so that he can watch the tally grow.

I wonder, MadIvan, would you mind introducing the FreeRepublic to Mr. Black? Thanks

Hey, we can grow the Republic and at the same time have a friend in the press.

Good post and heartening letter from the Brit. But I refuse to concede that our President is "not the sharpest knife in the cutlery set." He seems pretty damned smart to me (and I have a Ph.D.).

The intellectuals said that Ronald Reagan was dumb, too, but he "only" won the cold war, wrung Jimmy Carter's stagflation out of the economy, restored the military, ... shall I go on?

IMHO, Dubya is nearly as great a leader as Reagan was, and Reagan was as great as we've ever had.

The French think knowing the right wine is a form or morality. They confuse shallow fashion statements with seeking truth. The French are fools. Not one drop of American blood to save the French ever again. Let them speak German next time.

The French have called our national character of looking at things as right or wrong and doing what must be done thereafter as simplistic.

Thank you for posting this for all of us. It definitely ranks as a "spirit booster". Also, I will return the favor by checking out his column whenever I can. He will be a must read from now on. Also, please support Richard Littlejohn (The SUN) and Lord Rees-Mogg (The Times) and of course, The Telegraph (UK) all of these people are truly Pro-American.

I agree with you. I enjoyed the piece, but the dig at GWB's intelligence bothered me. Every idiot in the world seems to have claimed intellectual superiority to the POTUS, thanks to our press.

The myth that he isn't "sharp" should have died long ago.

I was OK until I got to...

your president may not be the sharpest knife in the cutlery set

That alone ruins everything else. It shows the author as arrogant and self-promoting. He puts himself up a pedistal - looking down on those with less intellect than himself (as he defines it, of course) and it is hypocritical (if Al Gore was in there - this phrase wouldn't see the light of day).

Socialists don't agree with freedom and capitalism - and why can't they just say that? Instead of the name-calling.

Well, I take those comments with a grain of salt. I have a talking problem just like W does but I am fully aware of what I'm trying to say. And I know he does too. Only libs who want to spew ad hominem resort to this perception, and those who are unversed in Texas speak catch on to and run with it as well.

This is an email I received from Mr. Black in response to my email to him.

It is for you all

Dear Wiz,

Thank you for your kind words. I must admit I was slightly embarrassed a few moments after first sending my letter but your reply and the many others I have received from all across the USA have made me realise I was right to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard to be more accurate).

I¹m sorry this reply is not more personal. I did start writing individual thank you¹s but my letter seems to have caused somewhat of a stir - and is being posted on newsgroups and passed along by e-mail, thus meaning I am receiving just too many letters to reply straight away.

If you are one of the people who wrote to me to to show support for my words - thank you - you can be sure that at least one European will be right by your side when times are at their darkest.

If you are one of the people who wrote to let me know that you are passing my letter to friends, newsgroups and local newspapers - thank you again. It does mean my e-mail address may need a re-think in the future but it is worth it - I do want the people of the USA to know that the majority of people on this side of the Atlantic will always remember who their true friends really are.

If you are one of the few people who wrote to me to tell me how naive I am - thank you for showing democracy in action - the fact you are allowed to mock, argue, accuse my sanity, even my ancestry and parentage, proves that America¹s actions in the past, like today, have helped maintain your right to do so - and my right to tell you what I believe - without fear.

You are not alone, now or in the future.

Regards

James Black
