In Texas you can kill someone while driving drunk and get probation. Happens all the time.

An 8 year sentence, which is by law a legal prison term for the offense, is too harsh for people endangering children not their own in your opinion.

At least now the kids can go back to the much safer practice of driving around while drinking beer or going out into the countryside and doing it.

"This event took place a month after a young lady lost her life," he said. "She wasn't even cold in the ground."

Wow, this judge must not understand Newton's Law of Cooling...

He should watch CSI more often :-)

And it says right there in black and write: "Nor shall eight years be demanded when only 60 to 80 children's lives are needlessly endangered; rather, 3 or 4 weekends will suffice."

Your love of the whip and chain is duly noted, CJ.

The party happened exactly one month after Albemarle High School student Brittany Bishop, 16, was killed in a drunken-driving accident on her way home from another party where underage drinking took place.

Anyone have a clue how much time these people are serving?

Did you read the rest of my post and his response? The judge deserves to be hung for his offense of giving a sentence that weikal disagreed with.

People on this site just hand ammunition to those that hate us.

The stupidity evident on DU is sometimes surpassed by the idiots on this site.

Our whole approach in this country towards alcohol is completely screwy, and is still infected with the stench of prohibitionism and the "temperance" movement.

We forbid young people from developing a responsible approach to alcoholic beverages until they're 21, and then we set them loose. And then we wonder why they have problems. The Europeans are wrong about most things, but this is one area where they have us beat.

I'm not defending these parents, (although the sentence is absurd) as they acted irresponsibly in several ways, but we really need to overhaul how we deal with kids and alcohol. The current model is not working.

Personalize nothing. The whip and chain was a metaphor for draconian punishemnt, man. I could care less about getting into a flame fest with you.

Eight years may be (MAY be) a bit much, but this IS against the law. What kind of stupid parents serve beer to a bunch of teens at a party? It's one thing to let your own kid have a beer or a wine cooler in your own home (although I wouldn't do it), but it's a whole other thing to get other parents' kids drunk.

Just sentence? Wonder what the dead girl thinks about it from her eternal perspective.

Wonder what her parents think about it.

They are probably wondering how they got involved in a case that had nothing to do with them.

That's the nature of freedom. We expect others to act responsibly and to accept the consequences of their own actions. What would be a better system in your mind? An army of government nurses for beer-guzzling teens, under the scheme of "harm reduction" and full employment? Don't let the Democrats, Greens, or Libertarians hear of this!

"Eight years in jail for serving beer in your own home is utterly unspeakable."

I would agree, if it had been only their own kids. They served alcohol to other people's kids.

"Soon they will be putting people in jail for exposing teenagers to second-hand smoke."

Come on, are yu saying these kids were only being exposed to second-hand alcohol? Your comparison doesn't work.

No, he needs hanging as the good Conservatives of this site will tell you. And don't you go disagreeing with them, or you will be a goose-stepping, jackbooted thug with no love of liberty.

I have a 16-year-old daughter. She knows the dangers of alcohol and driving or getting in a car with someone who was drinking. She knows how to say no when offered alcohol. They adults are responsible for serving alcohol to underage children, but the 16 year old also had some responsibility here - no one made her drink it. Sorry, but don't think there is a 16-year-old anywhere who hasn't heard of the consequences of drinking in school or on TV!
(I am sure I will get flamed for this).

"lock up those assault knives that you have in your kitchen, your 5 gallon buckets, and barricade your steps: They kill more children every year than anything else."

Source?
