SECAUCUS, N.J. -- February 12, 2003 -- Conservative talk radio phenomenon and best-selling author Michael Savage has been signed by MSNBC to host “The Savage Nation,” a one-hour weekly issue-oriented opinion show set to air live on Saturday afternoons at 5:00 pm (ET). The announcement was made today by Erik Sorenson, president, MSNBC.

The format of “The Savage Nation” will be based on Savage’s number one rated afternoon drive time radio program, which is heard on over 300 stations, including New York’s WABC and San Francisco’s KSFO. The new show, which premieres on MSNBC in March, will originate from San Francisco. It will feature penetrating and provocative commentary and opinion from Savage, mirroring his #1 New York Times best selling book “The Savage Nation.”

“Michael Savage is brash, passionate and smart,” said Sorenson. “His conservative point of view adds to the kaleidoscope of perspectives already heard on MSNBC - a place where a range of voices have their say, without any one dominating the channel itself. ‘The Savage Nation’ will anchor our Saturday afternoon program schedule and become destination television for those looking for compelling opinion and analysis with an edge.”

“I look forward to continuing on television what has made me so successful on radio,” said Savage. “People love my show because of my hard hitting style combined with intelligence and wit. Those who listen to me say they hear a bit of Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein. I’m looking forward to reaching new viewers while giving my existing audience more of what they have come to love and expect, including a look into my very private studio.”

An independent-minded individualist, Michael Savage fits no stereotype. He attacks big government and liberal media bias, but champions the environment and animal rights. Trained as a scientist, he holds Master's degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in Epidemiology and Nutrition Science. Along with the best selling book “The Savage Nation” and CD “Best of The Savage Nation,” he is also the author of the book “Herbs That Heal” and 17 other books. His radio show airs nationally on the Talk Radio Network and attracts one of the most loyal listening audiences in radio.

First of all, I'm not paranoid...Second, Are you saying...the cable and radio companies judge an audience of several million viewers based on a few hundred people who buy Neilson boxes?

It was a joke about the black helicopters thing....

As for your question...Yes. They judge ratings by an AMAZINGLY small amount of homes. And they are AMAZINGLY accurate. Don't ask me how they do it, but they do.

And no one "Buys" a Neilson Box. They are given out.

Has anyone ever met anyone or ever heard of anyone with a Neilson box?

Yes, but Nina died three years ago.

No, I don't think so. But I won't swear to it.

I've heard how they do radio ratings but can't remember. It's a REAL convoluted thing.

In a nutshell, but people don't "buy" Neilson boxes. They're somehow selected. It's a sampling (polling). Ever get called about which radio stations you listen to? Polling.

BTW, I'm sure many cable companies can read which stations you're tuned into, but woulnd't necessarily know whether or not your TV was on. And that wouldn't take into accound DISH and antennae users.

Morton Downey, Jr., in later years, was fairly close to what Joe Pine was like. In fact, I think Downey was accused of imitating Pine.

OK...I'm sure there is a joke in there. I'm also fairly sure it has something to do with me mis-spelling "Nielson" and some chick named Nina and her whisker bisquit.

But for the life of me, I just can't get it. Care to share?

well this really stinks...I've been keeping the TV on Fox News even during stupid shows like Greta to give them a ratings boost!;0 lol I guess I can start watching Crossfile instead of Shephard Smith and reruns of Donahue (gotta know the enemy) instead of Brit Hume.

So I guess you know me quite well? What's my name? Where do I live? Why have I voted straight-ticket Republican since I was 18?

LOL!!!

Dude, you GOTTA love your honesty! That's absolutely hilarious!!

Yeah, it's OK to watch CNN from time to time. But be careful, word on the street is that they still have subliminal messages in the commercials that run on CNN. They make you grow your hair, stop bathing, start hating America and give you urges to buy Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

You right wing, wingnuts make me puke! Try living in the real world. You can talk all you want about how things should really be, but if you cant get there, you're just playing with yourself.

Yes, I knew someone who had a Neilsen box or whatever they are called. Her name was Nina. I was just answering your question. She's the only one I've ever seen with a Neilsen box connected to her television.

On the other hand, I recall filling out one of those one or two week diary booklets documenting my watching habits in the past.

I hope this doesn't hurt Savage in the long run.

It's one thing to take phone calls from listeners, especially those who learned history via the public school system. It's quite another thing to have a television show where you are expected to converse with other respected opinion leaders, government officials, et. al.

People who have built reputations for themselves (Charles Barklay excluded) will not suffer Savage's antics for long.

What!??? Saturdays at 5:00PM? That's like giving someone a show at 1:00AM EST. If they really wanted this guy to be heard, they'de put him on nightly at 7 or 8.

When Savage was talking about going on the radio, I heard him asking people why Rush Limbaugh failed and Drudge failed.

He indicated that Rush and Drudge's style just didn't lend itself to TV, and he knew his would.

I wanted to call him and say that was not the case at all. The networks put Rush in a time zone that most people would never see. 12:00a.m.PT. Drudge walked out because he had no control over his program. He wanted to show a picture of a baby's hand reaching out of the cut open womb and holding the surgeon's hand as they were getting ready to operate on the fetus.

We will see if Michael Savage can last on TV.

I won't be viewing since I no longer have cable.

He likes to call them idiots and hang up on them.

I wonder if he can do that on TV.
