Canadian Court Agrees That Bible is Hate Literature

Saskatchewan, Feb 11, 03 (LSN.ca/CWNews.com) - In a ruling given virtually no media coverage, the Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatchewan, ruled that a man who placed references to Bible verses on homosexuality into a newspaper ad was guilty of inciting hatred. The December 11, 2002 decision was in response to an appeal of a 2001 Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (HRC) ruling which ordered both the Saskatoon StarPhoenix newspaper and Hugh Owens of Regina to pay CAN$1,500 to three homosexual activists for publishing an ad in the Saskatoon newspaper quoting Bible verses regarding homosexuality.

The purpose of the ad was to indicate that the Bible says no to homosexual behavior. The advertisement displayed references to four Bible passages: Romans 1, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, on the left side. An equal sign (=) was situated in the middle, with a symbol on the right side. The symbol was comprised of two males holding hands with the universal symbol of a red circle with a diagonal bar superimposed over top.

Justice J. Barclay rejected the appeal ruling: "In my view, the Board was correct in concluding that the advertisement can objectively be seen as exposing homosexuals to hatred or ridicule. When the use of the circle and slash is combined with the passages of the Bible, it exposes homosexuals to detestation, vilification and disgrace. In other words, the Biblical passage which suggests that if a man lies with a man they must be put to death exposes homosexuals to hatred."

Janet Epp Buckingham, Legal Counsel for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, told LifeSite: "The ruling that a verse from the Bible can be considered to expose homosexuals to hatred shows the danger for Scripture if Bill C-250 passes." Bill C-250, proposed by homosexual activist MP Svend Robinson, would see "sexual orientation" added to hate crime law as a prohibited ground of discrimination.

I have been told that it is a hate crime in Canada to call someone a sinner or to point out to them that they are sinners in need of repentance. I have also been told that preachers are forbidden from making such accusations to their parishoners. Any truth to that?

No, it is not true.

Are you confident that you could post the same stuff through your IPS, or do you think you might have the government knock on your door or someone who could be offended slap you with a viable lawsuit if you tried?

The pro-life Web site posted the following description of the offending advertisement on June 16, 2001:

The ad gave four Bible passages from Romans I, Leviticus and First Corinthians, which condemn homosexuality. The list was followed by a mathematical equal sign, which was followed by two stick-figure men holding hands. This drawing was contained within the universal prohibition symbol (circle with a slash across it). Viewed in its entirety, the purpose of the ad was to indicate that the Bible says no to homosexual behaviour.

Now you know everything you need to reproduce the offending ad yourself (I have seen other articles which posted specifically which verses were referenced, to wit: Romans 1:21-32; Lev. 18:22, 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:1-10) or just picture it in your head. Are the people at LSN.ca concerned about posting this "hate speech"? Apparently not. Am I concerned about posting it here? Nope. Do Owens' views reflect my own? Yes.

Canada has no First Amendment.

That is because they have no Second Amendment.

In these United States, Snowyman, I am free to quote the Bible. You, demonstrably, are not. ~ yendu bwam Woody.

Sorry to keep ya waiting. The dims and media learned their lessons in the 2000 elections and we'll get Mrs. Clinton for president and she'll go after Christians with a fury, using hate as her justification--after we are convinced to give up our weapons.

Ok?

Woody the problem is that you won't find a newspaper that will print it in the United States. Its economics. Its not government censorship. While the newspaper would get complaints, if you were to take out the same ad in the United States you would not be in danger of facing a VIABLE lawsuit. It would get thrown out at the first hearing. Even with a Clinton appointee.

Canadians are in the unenviable position of having a government that prohibits the quoting of the bible if it offends the sensibilities of strange or queer people. We're not there....yet.

tell me how free you are.

It's not the government limiting freedoms, it's economics. Pretty sad when you think about it.

Federal judges (Supreme, Federal and Tax Courts) and judges of provincial superior courts and courts of appeal are appointed by the federal cabinet: the PM on advice of the minister of justice, in reality.

Provincial court judges are appointed by the provincial cabinet.

We have never had elected judges.

Very odd. There is a Christian FM Radio station in Ottawa and has been for years.

Yeah, gee. No sweat. Run an ad promoting homosexuality and see what happens.

[HINT: You'll be applauded, lauded, and kissed on all four cheeks.]

The Western world......aka or formerly known as the "Christian world"......has gone nucking futs.

Um....you are not free to post anything on Free Republic because if something is found to be objectionable by an admin mod or Jim Robinson it will be Zotted posthaste. There are guidelines which state no profanity, no personal attacks, no racism or violence in posts. I've noticed a lot of disruptors get their posts deleted with great efficiency.

I stand corrected..they have changed the law ..however it must still be difficult as many programs still use border town stations to access the Canadian market

I found this on the net

The CRTC made it legal in Canada and revised the Religious Broadcasting Policy in June of 1993 to allow single faith ownership.

So it sounds like the Muslims and Catholics and maybe other big churches can have stations..but they do not have mixed programing as we have here it sounds like

Well FR is not run by the government is it?

That is the difference, isn't it? The Government isn't going to arrest me if I state, on FR, that homosexuals are going to go to hell unless they repent of their sin. But If I place an ad in a canadian paper saying that homosexuals are going to go to hell unless they repent, I could get sued by some offended homo or arrested under some inane hate crime law.

I wonder if this post will get pulled because I stated that homosexuals will go to hell unless they repent.
