[history]
No sooner had I walked backstage at Madison Square Garden yesterday when I was brushed aside by a beautifully groomed, purebred bitch who possessed the manners of a mongrel.
She was a dog owner.
"A- -hole!" the high-strung biped ranted, just loud enough to drive a sensitive cocker spaniel to the kibble.

She's said that the WDS is nothing but politics. Would never go to it. And she's had dogs that qualified for it. And she is absoluely right!! It's nothing but pure politics. To cite an example, I have two basset hounds and we "roo, roo" when the basset steps out in the hound group. For the past 4 years, the best of breed in the basset group has been the same one - Bumper Cars. There are 50 gazillion basset hounds in the US. There is NO WAY that Bumper Cars can be the #1 basset for 4 years running. If that is true, then it doesn't say much for the other breeders.
A few years ago, I attended my first and last dog show. It was a small event in upstate NY. Again, with the bassets, we knew someone who was showing her dog. Before entering the ring, she checked out the competition, recognized one of the other breeder/handlers, looked at the judge and announced that he would win. Sure enough, the other dog took it, over 10 bassets. "They're good friends", she told me later.
So what .... WKC is fun to watch. Each year I learn something new about a different breed. Of course, only certain breeds ever win their group. Did you catch the stunned reaction and long ovation last night when the judge selected the Ibizan Hound. That was considered a major upset! LOL!!

What a fine dog! And talented too. Dals have a reputation for aloofness...but mine are marvelous around children (and very patient with them, which they have to be, because they get mobbed all the time).
The previous photo was my male, Chance, this is my female, Emma:

I wasn't able to watch is this year.
I am stunned that an Ibizan won the Hound group.
My neighbor has told similiar stories. It upsets her when the best dog doesn't win. And hers aren't always the best.

My two Schnauzers attempting to hypnotize my Dad into giving them a piece of cheese! Toooooooo funny! One of my neighbors, years ago, had a schnauzer. When it "went to the bridge", she was devastated. Her husband surprised her with a puppy, though, several months later. Don't know for sure where he acquired the pup but he mistakenly selected a giant schnauzer. Needless to say, he didn't need to hypnotize anyone when he wanted a treat.
Wish I could post a picture of my bassets. I don't have a host site though.

Helps me teach fire safety at the local schools, (stop, drop and roll, crawl low in smoke etc.) Congratulations on selecting a dog with a purpose and allowing him to fulfill it. The dog must feel a genuine sense of accomplishment and pride in its work. Kudos on a beautiful picture, as well!

Sure enough, the other dog took it, over 10 bassets. "They're good friends", she told me later. Happens a lot. But there are honest judges out there, too. Winning is fun, but it's not everything. I've found that by just enjoying the day, and how wonderful my dog looks (and behaves) makes it worthwhile.
We almost beat the number 1 Akita in the country for best of breed in my dogs 3rd show ever. I know my dog moves better, and he'll still fill out more. But, realistically, I can't compete with the amount they spend on the other dog - and if I could, I wouldn't. There are just more important things in life, and I do this for fun, not because I've got my ego confused with how my dog looks.

Dals have a reputation for aloofness They need lots of TLC and more important they need to be part of the pack (family) You don't tie one to a dog house all day and expect them to be normal when you get home. Sparky gets to go to work with me everyday and sleep on the floor of the office (when he dosn't sneak off to the couch!)

Let's just say they know an easy mark when they see one.
They won't even attempt to moochy act when it's just the missus and I.

The "sport" is the breeding and training..my dog would have fallen asleep and snored ..
My son says if there is no ball it is not a sport..maybe your two should fight it out..

I hate that NYT's ad about the crossword puzzel too. What do you suppose she means by that statement? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Poorly worded.
