It seems we have unleashed yet another bit of bastardized English; this one is "my bad".

Mín bæddel. (Yeah, I know the meaning completely changed in the 13th-15th centuries, but I felt like learning some OE today.)

He brain farted and couldn't come up with the word 'possible' and he blurted out 'doable'

Well, an earthquake in California this year is possible, but I'm not sure that it's doable. Just saying.

Let me give you some examples. That English course I took was offered off campus. The class was made up of mostly of English teachers and other adults of various ages seeking continous education. I was probably the youngest student and other than the teacher, the only male in the class.

This 70 year old lady, an English teacher, speaks up and says, "Well language must change. Last week, I asked this girl in my class 'how she made out last night' and you should have heard the laughter."

Our class broke up laughing and as soon as we paused, she continued with "One day I said 'I got so mad I shot my wad.' and you should have heard the guffaws." At this point, our class was laughing hysterically. And the poor lady still didn't know what she had said. As the only guy, the class nominated me to tell her, but fortunately one of the other ladies volunteered to tell her after class.

It is impossible for me to have less interest or concern in this matter, since I am already utterly indifferent.

Do you usually use:

"My bad": use of slang expressions is a sign of slovenly thinking, and is frowned upon by intelligent people.

"I'm sorry, I made a mistake": use of long phrases to express an idea that could be conveyed more succinctly is a sign of lack of thought before speaking.

"mea culpa": Use of a dead language (or French) to voice an idea that could be better communicated in anglo-saxon words (eg "my Bad") is a sign of pretension and should be avoided.

Hope this helps

Sometimes one or the other of us says squeet.

About the only time I ever felt Dan Rather had a sense of humor was when he was explaining the Texas phrase "y'unt sum" to Don Imus.

It seems a few of the boys was agoin' inta town to fetch a little beer and they asked him: "Y'unt sum?"

Wexford, is it?

My great-granddaddy, William Burns was born in Wicklow in 1829.

Others are the Shalveys and Keelans from Cooteshill, Cavan and Prendergasts and Trentyards from Galway.

Time for a toddy and gd'na.
