ANNAN: 'DON'T GO IT ALONE' (VOMITING TILL YOU DIE ALERT)
Sky News ^ | February 8, 2003 | Sky News

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has warned the United States against launching a unilateral attack on Iraq.

He argued that action under a UN umbrella would have greater legitimacy and better odds of success.

In an address marking the 310th anniversary of William and Mary College, Annan stressed that force should be used only as a last resort.

But if the UN Security Council concludes, after a key report by UN inspectors due on Friday, that Iraq is not disarming as required by council resolutions, "the council must face up to its responsibilities," he said.

"When there is strong UN leadership, exercised through patient diplomatic persuasion and coalition-building, the United Nations is successful.

"The United Nations is most successful to all its members, including the United States, when it is united and works as a source of collective action rather than discord.

"The broader our consensus on Iraq, the better the chance that we can come together and deal effectively with other burning conflicts in the world, which cause untold suffering and which urgently need our attention - from Israel and Palestine to Congo and Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), not to mention our efforts to stabilize Afghanistan," he said.

He certainly did not object to the French and I don't hear anything out of him on Korea -- that seems to be an American problem.

That clip of the speech I heard on MSNBC sent me through the roof! I cannot imagine what the President and his Staff are saying about now!

Let's see, what were those percentages again? France 6% of the UN budget, Germany 6%, Russia 2%, China 2%. Hmmmmm, looks like the UN is going to have to go on a starvation diet. Too bad they won't be getting any humanitarina aid, since the US supplies 60% of all humanitarian aid, add to that the aid provided by Britain, Australia, Japan, Spain, etc. they're going to be in a LOT of trouble.

The UN was supposed to stop dictatorships from threatening others, not provide a means for their preservation. As the UN has comprehensively failed at this, over 50 years of operation, it is time to disband it.

And I dare say, recoup some of the cost by selling the real estate it inhabits. ;)

Regards, Ivan

I suspect it is not pretty, PKM. And regarding your thought that clinton wrote Annan's speech...I hardily agree. What happens next should be very interesting.

LOL. That's exactly what I saw, worried about his job. He certainly should be worried. IMO, had any of them ever listened to Senator Helms, or President Bush, they would understand the American people. What the UN represents, to me, is a place for American's to go anytime we feel like being beat up, by every tin horn dictator in the World. All the while, paying for that service, presented with bills of astronomical porportions, and expected to sit quietly, enduring all abuse. BAH.

Here's an idea...
Boot the UN, level the UN building, then... construct one whopping big tower/arcology at the WTC site, and its twin at the former UN site.

A reporter on CNN this morning said she had just returned from East Texas where she had been covering the shuttle disaster and mentioned with surprise the most popular bumper stickers were --

"Get the UN out of the US"

That's right - When the definition of 'going it alone' becomes anything we decide to do without the UN ORGANIZATION approving, we should be running to the exit. We have a large coalition and never before in history would an alliance of 26 countries have been defined as 'alone'.

The UN is not a country and is not part of our government. The UN is mutual admiration society of leftists and despots, and a megaphone for those who hate the US. While it may occasionally be useful as a place to let everyone vent, it must never be allowed to determine our fate.

*Saying the US is going it "alone" is vaguely insulting to the us and the Australians too. What, did we suddenly stop being separate countries or something?*

Agreed Ivan. How politically un-correct of them!! Why haven't they considered and debated this aspect of their stance and statments? Time for them to begin the self-floggings.

Prairie (actually it's very insulting to the British and Australians, shame shame shame you libs!)

Like the Korean "police action" you mean? That's worked out fairly well, for the South Koreans. For the North Koreans it's resulted in 50 years of economic misery and political tyranny. For the region it's resulted in the possibilty of nuclear devastation. Yeah action under the UN umbrella has been just dandy, instead of fixing the problem, it tends to put a bandaide on it.
