Statewide CHP "BOLO" on missing sulphuric acid load
scanner 42.400
Posted on 02/07/2003 5:48:11 PM PST by BurbankKarl
Heard a "be on the lookout" broadcast of a 20 foot shipping container loaded with sulphuric acid stolen in the Corona area today. I didn't note the plates, other than it had Oregon registration.

"stolen in the Corona area"Did they check to see if it's circling on that endless circlular boulevard they got down there? Used to be a race track, didn't it?

I checked all the websites of the local LA news and couldn't find anything. What time was this reported? Here's the scoop on SA.Safety
(MSDS) data for sulfuric acid (concentrated)
Physical data
Appearance: Colourless oily liquid
Melting point: -2 C
Boiling point: 327 C
Specific gravity: 1.84
Vapour pressure: <0.3 mm Hg at 20 C (vapour density 3.4)
Flash point:
Explosion limits:
Autoignition temperature:
Water solubility: miscible in all proportions
Stability
Stable. Substances to be avoided include water, most common metals, organic materials, strong reducing agents, combustible materials, bases, oxidising agents. Reacts violently with water - when diluting concentrated acid, carefully and slowly add acid to water, not the reverse. Reaction with many metals is rapid or violent, and generates hydrogen (flammable, explosion hazard).
Toxicology
Extremely corrosive, causes serious burns. Highly toxic. Harmful by inhalation, ingestion and through skin contact. Ingestion may be fatal. Skin contact can lead to extensive and severe burns. Chronic exposure may result in lung damage and possibly cancer.

Don't worry about sulfuric acid - it can't do much by itself. Nitric acid, however, can be used to make explosives - easily.

Terrorists might be interested in damaging, or destroying a major bridge somewhere in CA. A large quantity of sulphuric acid dumped on a bridge would do a great deal of damage before being cleaned up ... resulting in closure for months, if not years. That's why trucks transporting hazardous material of this type are routed around large bridges and tunnels.

Sulfuric acid makes great volcanoes mixed with sugar. Well, ok, not *that* great.
To: BurbankKarl
A terrorist wouldn't need to steal the stuff. It's readily available and cheap.

I used to threaten my little brother with throwing him into a vat of sulphuric acid. It sure scared him until he found out that I didn't have one.

And here I thought is was one of them things the Argentina cowboys used to contol cattle!!! No, no, it's Argentinian cowboy neckwear. Kinda like that those string ties Barry Goldwater and Isaac Asimov always used to wear.
Or was it the music Dudley Moore stumbled around to while trying to seduce Bo Derek in "10"?
