CNN | Feb. 6, 2003 | CNN

CNN just announced that President Bush will speak at 4:30. That's all they said. Didn't sound like it was previously scheduled.

"Lobbing some bombs is the Clinton approach and it never works."

Please. I'm not talking about a handful of cruise missiles. I'm talking about heavy bombing, everyday. Dropping daisy cutters on each of the 100 presidential palaces, then coming back the next day and bombing the rubble, just in case there are some bunkers underneath.

Unfortunately, there are only two sides to this debate: the Hollywood left opposing attacks, and the Bush-style offensive. I'm for heavy, sustained bombing, directed primarily at Hussein personally, even if he is in "civilian" areas. And no Americans on the ground in that hell hole.

Also, this time aroud, when it's over, let's "negotiate" a 99 year lease on some well-situated Iraqi real estate there so we can set up a big military base, so we don't have to suck up to all these two-bit regimes over there the next time some trouble comes up.

Everyone, please freep that CNN poll Blitzer put up. It's horrible. Splits our votes 3 ways, while Clinton is the only choice Democrats have. Boo hiss. Typical democrat behavior. They make me ill.

I know Bush is not that way, which is why I am befuddled as to the purpose of this announcement today. I admit I took a few phone calls during the event, but the reason I thought this thing had to be about Korea was because our momentum on Iraq was well underway given yesterday's revelations and the positive response across the political spectrum today. I'm thinking about perceptions of leadership ... and there will be many who will view this event as a vanity show of insecurity.

Everyone knows we're serious - everyone knows that Powell is on board with the President's assessment of our urgent national security priority. I agree with Goodman on his take here.

I am fully open, however, to being enlightened on what added value this event provided to the larger process. Powell's position in this campaign is important from a diplomatic and strategic position, and his efforts yesterday should have been given time to reach fruition and maximum influence.

It's going to get down in the teens tonight here in North Texas but no snow in our area. Keep warm and safe.

State Department warning.Worst news yet, for Americans. New info about drones launched from ships being a credible threat. Saddam saying he will unleash chemical weapons on our troops/civilians. Just guessing here. (clearing throat)

Regarding spotlight-grabbing, might it be possible that Bush WAS grabbing the spotlight--not to bolster his ego but to deflect focus from the plagiarism "scandal" surrounding Powell? He'd get my vote for Boss of the Year. 'Course, he got it anyway....

Value added:

1. Gives Tony Blair a bone with his base by saying we will welcome a second resolution.
2. With another reference to the Mirage plane in Iraq, it lets the French know they had better get on board, or we will be calling them on their help to Saddam.
3. The Security Council is put on notice that they have a short time frame to get on board. They arent going to be given months to debate.
4. Consolidates American opinion by getting the President's message on the news at prime time.
5. Gives Colin Powell some glory, which he deserves.
6. Nervous Iraqis might move stuff, which can be noted by our intelligence peope.

Now, are you satisfied?

He was resolute. I think the fact that so many did NOT take Powell as seriously as perhaps the President had anticipated caused him to speak up.

You are making me nervous with all this worrying about Disney World, as I live near there. Did I miss something about Florida specifically being targeted? The US has two very long seacoasts, and Florida is just a small part of it.

Thanks for the Ping. I've been out all afternoon, caught the end of his remarks in the car. He sounded very somber and resolute. Whazzup ?

Thanks! FR has been part of my daily routine for months now, but I figured it was time to stop lurking and start contributing. Regarding your post 711, you sure could be right. I'm cubicle-bound, so I didn't get to see either presentation (Powell's or Bush's), or the reaction to each. If some people thought Powell's speech wasn't devastating, maybe the info on hostile "crop-dusters" will galvanize them. I know I'm feeling a little galvanized right now....

Thanks for the ping. But I missed it because I was taking a mid-afternoon nap. Will they re-run the speech? Was it on CSPAN? I feel so out of it today.

He bacisally told the U.N. and Saddam, "you're out of time."

Or as I said, he just told the Security Council and Iraq it's time to fish or cut bait.
