Wow! Saying he was outraged to find out that for several years IN THE 1990'S we not only didn't hire anyone, we didn't even give the exam!"

Another legacy of you-know-who!

Colin Powell is a very effective speaker. He moved 7% of the public yesterday with his report, and a very sad Tim Russert reported that President Bush's approval numbers have risen 7% in their new NBC poll. He looked truly crushed which rather made my day.

MY significant other has control of the tv, so please explain, "We didn't hire anyone in the 90's?".

Thanks in advance.

I heard him say this about "in the nineties" and dashed to FR to see if anyone else did.

Colin's one tough cookie these days...thank goodness! He told the Senate that the Bush administration efforts to reach out to the people of America is the reason that 80,000 new people are interested in serving in the foreign service - far more than at any time in the past - and that it would be a shame if the Senate only funded a few hundred.

Did you just hear Russert say " 75% approval on going into Iraq wasn't enough....this President will need to bump that number up a little more before he goes in..."

Timmy doesn't know this butt from his head.

I'm not following. Exam for what?

For foreign service.

He stated that recently they have accepted a record number of applicants that could be compared to any previous year and one could see how eager so many are to aid our country.

He said this was due to stepping up recruitment efforts and getting the word out. Then he said he was outraged to learn that in the nineties this effort wasn't made and some years the test was not even offered.

He explained that if we want able staff to replace outgoing personnel this must be a continous effort.

The African aid will go to countries that encourage freedom, root out corruption.

He was talking about how understaffed the State Department is. He was referring to the new hire of foreign service officers and the foreign service exam.

He compared it to the military failing to have any new junior officers in the chain. AND he DEFINITELY said "for several years in the 1990's."

SLAM! Go Colin!!

This comment was posted on another thread regarding Biden.

Hawks, doves on Hill praise Powell's speech

I watched Joe Biden on CSPAM last night. If you didn't see the "D" after his name, you'd think you were listening to someone in the administration.

Biden is a cold-eyed realist, he didn't say one thing that I could quibble with. He knows where going to war and he can articulate exactly why.

He made one good point on preemption. He says this isn't preemption, it's enforcement of the 1991 peace agreement. Big difference and good point.

He feels that we will need a lot of international help with the nation-building phase which he thinks will be long and difficult.

He wants to get as much of the world on board and signed up to the largest extent possible - it can only help later on.

He says he might have handled things differently at various points but he says "we are where we are" so we have to proceed on that basis.

He is very careful in what he says and what he attributes to others.

When did this guy grow a pair? He used to be a typical spinelss democrat. He has certainly increased in stature in my view.

I believe Russert said that Bush I had 75%...and that this President Bush would like to bump up the numbers towards that. He said right now, only 60% are for the war. I was sceptical of what he was saying about all of this but I must admit I was most interested in how terribly sad he looked at having to admit that the President's approval numbers had gone up 7%. He looked crushed. Hehehe...

Colin speaks so fast!

The aids funds will target 14 of the hardest hit countries.

Money for Columbia to fight the narco-terrorists.
