"I believe that we are God's noble experiment." Sen. Chuck (E-cheese) Schumer
C-Span 2 | Feb. 5, 2003

Posted on 02/05/2003 2:03:03 PM PST by Ragtime Cowgirl

Quotes from Chuck Schumer on the floor of the Senate during the past 10 minutes (C-span 2). Working up to a whopper of an excuse for rejecting Miguel Estrada as a judicial candidate.

"For those of us who revere the Constitution and believe in the rule of law...I believe that we are God's noble experiment. The Senate must hold up its end of the bargain. We have a duty to the judiciary, to the Constitution and, yes, to the American people."
"We have an obligation to be vigilant defenders of Constitutional obligation. We must live up to the standards of those who came before us."

God is saving the lightning for later, I guess. Chuckie's accusing us of making personal attacks.

"It's deeply and solemnly necessary to uphold the will of the founding fathers."

Oh, please! Chuckie should read the Constitution again. It would tell him that he is no longer a member of the majority. "Will of the people" and according to the Constitution.

"This goes to the very sacred obligation each of us has when we take that oath of office."

The mind boggles. Gen. Washington demanded his troops refrain from swearing - 25 lashes for taking God's name in vain.

Is the Hispanic Caucus against this nomination?

And taking God's name was exactly what Schumer's pompous little diatribe amounted to.

There will be no roll call vote tomorrow.

No way can the Dems. stand up to mild-mannered Orrin Hatch. He has the facts and the faith and he isn't budging. Harry Reid tried to get the final word - defend the Democratic Hispanic Caucus - but Orrin ends the debate, "their letter speaks for itself." (^:

If only Schumer were credible.

Otherwise, I agree with all his statements except "...we are God's noble experiment."

...Tho' it does seem Chuck is experimenting with God.

Remember even though they say we can't pray in school, they don't know that our Heavenly Father can read our minds.

So long as we keep this a free country the air bag can't stop anyone from praying.

Is the Hispanic Caucus against this nomination?

Yes. Check out #60. Orrin nailed them - said they were a Democratic machine, that they kicked out the GOP members and then Orrin named the Republican hispanics who supported Miguel. Sen. Hatch is great. He's taking no prisoners. Sen. Harry Reid twice tried to defend the Hispanic Caucus only to be roundly scolded by Hatch.

Sen. Hatch had a memorable line - called the Democratic party an "intellectual glass ceiling for minorities." (^:

I'm now looking forward to every Bush judicial fight.

"He's reaching out and doing a good job. That's one of the things I love about him." Sen. Hatch on Pres. Bush.

The defining moment of the modern Democratic Party was the anti-Bork campaign. It was then that the Dems realized that they could lie and lie and lie and get away with it, because the media is on their side. That is why they hate Fox so much, because Fox is the fly in the ointment, the spoiler.

This is a painful new reality for them, isn't it? Let's hope the country can survive their - how did Peter Jennings put it, "collective temper tantrum."

I wonder why Schumer never became a high ranking judge...the failure seems to be eating away at his guts.
Peering over his eyeglasses like a judge certainly isn't satisfying that thirst of his.

Linda Bowles, On the Constitution July 4, 2001.

This is to say, it wouldn't take much to push the Constitution off the judicial stage and into, as we commentators like to say, the garbage can of history. Time will tell whether such a push was recently administered by Senator Charles Schumer, in his capacity as chairman of the Judiciary Courts subcommittee.

On June 26, 2001, Senator Schumer advised all attentive Americans that the Democrat members of the U.S. Senate would apply ideological (political) litmus tests to judges nominated by President George W. Bush. Nominees will be asked questions about their personal and legal positions on key issues, including but not limited to: abortion, gun control, homosexual rights, campaign financing, tobacco legislation, states rights, property rights, school choice, environmentalism and separation of church and state.

To what end? Sen. Schumer makes it crystal clear by asserting that the Senate has the right to oppose nominees "whose views fall outside the mainstream." In this context, it is not inappropriate to note that on most of these issues, the ideology of most conservatives falls well outside Sen. Schumer's personal "mainstream."

Senator Schumer's announcement of his party's intention to do ideological tests runs counter to 200 years of tradition, during which the Senate, with a few exceptions, conscientiously worked at insulating judges from politics.

Where was your reverence for the Constitution, and your belief in the rule of law Mr. Schumer when you overlooked Bill Clinton's blatant lies under oath and obstruction of justice. Where was your duty to the Judiciary, the Constitution, and the American people Mr. Schumer when you allowed Bill Clinton to get away with repeatedly lying under oath to a Federal Judge and to the American people. If you were so interested in honoring your oath of office, you would have sent Bill Clinton packing when he violated his. You'll never have to worry about living up to the standards of the founding fathers. You aren't good enough, and never will be, to polish their boots.

My state (NY) has two very liberal senators, too. Moderates and conservatives in my state have no representation in the US Senate.

I think Schumer was uncharacteristically low-key, while Hillary ran for her Senate seat. And I think he behaved that way so that non-liberal New Yorkers would not realize that electing Hillary would mean throwing moderates (as well as conservatives) out into the cold.
