Article shows a NASA engineer noting the difficulties in creating the same characteristics.

No doubt. That shot could not have been taken from the shuttle, as it is 90 degrees above the wing, and any shot "from a shuttle window" would show the wing at a nearly 180 angle. One person tried to tell me we could photograph the wing from Earth, but looking at the pic, it is obvious that did not happen.

Of course if the leading edge was damaged, the the zipper effect would be much more likely than if the hit was at the back of the wing.

Not if it had never lifted off was it beyond hope, as NASA was warned. Nasa choice to dismiss the warnings from this man.
NASA must change its operating philosophy or that light at the end of the tunnel will be an approaching freight train!
Don A. Nelson is an aerospace writer. He retired from NASA in January 1999 after 36 years with the Agency. He participated in the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle Projects as a mission planner and operations technologist. Mr. Nelson was a supporting team member for the first rendezvous in space, first manned mission to the moon, first manned lunar landing, and the first flight of the Space Shuttle. During his last 11 years at NASA, he served as a mission operations evaluator for proposed advanced space transportation projects. He was on the initial design team for the space shuttle. He has participated in every shuttle upgrade effort until his retirement.

I am surprised that PETA hasn't been demonstrating about the loss of spiders, et al, and demanding to know the answer to the crash immediately.

I am not saying that the foam angle is being witheld. I am only pointing reference in the article highlighted above, which EXPLICITLY states that tests are being withheld.

Sounds like NASA is following the SOP for an accident investigation.

Well, as long as we're discussing ice, it's looking like it could have played a role in both of our major accidents.
How long until NASA figures out it maybe oughta discontinue flights in the late January time frame?

I think the angle that the foam hit the tiles CAUSES MORE DAMAGE (Shearing) than if it hit at 90 Degrees.
I am an engineer and I find it hard to believe their much better Engineers that I could dismiss the impact angle....

We shouldn't allow "fact" to interfer with the ravings of this moron. Afterall, in just a couple of hours the rest of the nation will be holding a memorial service while he continues to dishonour them. Those seven astronauts weren't fools and many of them had been with NASA for years. They were real aeronautical engineers and pilots, not some wacked out fruitcake with a computer and a grudge. Unless he somehow thinks they were fools or somehow duplicitous in their own deaths.

They should not of flown this shuttle and they know it.
Bill O'Reilly is on the Job as is anyone with common sense.

NASA has been warned about problems for years! They may not want to allow the release of evidence that could be used to prove that in court.
To: CWOJackson
I didn't put up this thread but we have gone over all the stuff in this story here at FR the other night! Where were you?
