Wouldn't just about everything of any quantity have been burned off? I mean, we're talkin 3000 degrees.

Irresponsible bashing has become a verbal blood sport to some, I think. Thanks for pinging.

...why a mere 60 degree rise on the external fuselage above the left wing was significant.

If enough heat got past the tiles to raise the internal structure 60 degrees in five minutes, the tiles aren't doing their job. Internal heat changes are normally very slight on the structure of the shuttles themselves.

The sensor drop-out is easy to explain, if you understand something of how sensors work. The computers ask the question of a sensor: "What's your reading?" The sensors do not send data, per se, but respond to the question. If a burn-through obliterated the sensor between questions, the next question simply gives no answer.

"This is the thread for discussing the ongoing press conference."

Ummmm, that's the impression I got from the thread title. I was merely asking a question in resonse to what someone else said.

Unfortuneately, most of the media types that I remember that knew something about the space program retired right after the early flights of the Shuttle.

I was talking about being eager for news from the people who actually know something about this, the NASA people, not media types.

I think that a reasonable assumption could be that the rise in temp, coupled with the rise in tire pressure on the left tire, could have caused the tire to explode....

I never believed the "toxic" thing for a second.

The potential for traces of human remains on some debris is possible ...

Yeah, that's what we need, a nice juicy lawsuit. That will certainly help things. </sarcasm off>

The shuttle is an operational system, but an experimental vehicle. It falls in the same catagory as test pilot missions, with the same and justifiable assumption of risk by the crews that fly them.

Yes, I think their main point is "leave the stuff alone". Not too tall of a request really.
