Fighters don't go into a rapid orbital reentry though. Ive heard the friction causes the air ahead of the spacecrafts reentry path to get up to around 12,000 degrees. If the hab pod is breached then anyone inside would be burned to ashes which would then be scattered everywhere.

Thin plasma at a high temperature still contains a relatively low heat density. It takes a lot of energy to boil off all the water in a human body and burn it to ash -- that's why cremation takes an hour or more.

Off topic but did anyone catch CNN this afternoon when they ran the crawl at the bottom of the screen stating that the orbiter was traveling at 18 times the speed of "Light"?

If the media reported world events the way they report science, the news would describe the US bombing of Uzbekistan in retaliation for the destruction of the Empire State Building by Hindu terrorists running a zeppelin into it in October 2001.

Well Dr Joe pointed out there is no oxygen to support combustion . . . Yes but combustion would effect weather the remains are identifiable . . . .

Give it up, weikel. There IS O2 from the surface of the earth right up to the "edge" of the atmosphere. In fact the US is developing new propulsion systems (scram jets?) to scoop in and combust the very O2 that "Dr Joe" says does not exist.

Please, weikel, give it up.

O2 is not very dense in the mesosphere though. steve-b made a better point.

I think they call that "ablation."

For some of us it would be called "ablution".

;)

Millner will become the first man to break the sound barrier unaided

Maybe the first man since Joe Kittinger accomplished that feat on 16 August 1960.

It should actually be the Mourner's Kaddish:

You're right - I couldn't remember the entire Kaddish. (Lousy excuse, I know.) May they all rest in peace.

Baruch hashem Adonai (excuse my very limited Hebrew)

Not nearly as limited as mine. And Amen.

Sh'ma Yisroel, Adonai elohainu, Adonai eh'chad.

I had heard, and please excuse the spelling here, that it was "Sh'ma Yisroel, Adonai elohainu, Adonai eh'lohm."

Or is that something else?

Definitely eh'chad - the translation is "Hear oh Israel, the Lord our G*d, the Lord is one," and eh'chad means "one." (I have just exhausted my knowledge of Hebrew.)

Fact:

The craft was at an altitude of some 220,000 feet and traveling at a velocity of Mach 18 plus (12,500 mph...stick you hand out the window at that speed!)

A hand loaded 30.06 bullet tracels at approximately 3200 feet/sec...that's 2181 mph.

The craft was traverlng at six time the speed of a bullet.

Nuff said?

it is sufficient to find 7 left hands to make the statement that remains of all 7 had been recovered.

Not to be too picky - or two gruesome, go back and read the post about which I commented. The post said:

the remains of all 7 astronauts have been recovered

"the" implies all remains, not just hands. And the use of the word "the" is therefore incorrect.

Even in your reply, you refrained from using the term "the remains"

Regardless, NASA has now corrected themselves and admitted that they have not recovered remains (partial or otherwise) from all seven.

Ok, but you seem to have misunderstood me. I used your correction to add comment. IOW I was not disagreeing with you in any way and I was using your statement which left out the "the" to build on. Noting now, as you do, that the original statement was a misstatement.
