I also learned about the crisis here. About 9:20 to be exact. I was here sifting thru piles of E-Mail and saw a ping to a "lost contact" thread. I really didn't think anything of it, kinda early and the coffee was jsut hitting me. After finding what I wanted I saw at least 10 pings to Shuttle blows up threads.
I didn't even turn on the TV to confirm until close to 10AM.
We'll see how somber they get when the AZ board comes online tuesday.
The Site,
http://www.azfire.org , is up and the press release along with an image of the artwork are posted there.
Gonna start another fund raiser on tuesday too.
FRegards,
EB

Perhaps the reason for the upswing is the recent dearth of pro-drug threads to turn normal people away.

Odd to see the 24 month version, apparently September 2001 is the earliest this link will go. Hence you can see FreeRepublic's post-911 spike, and probably trace out the big news events of the day in the past year or so.
To: Jim Robinson
Congratulations on the well-deserved media attention. Just sad that it had to happen w/ this awful tragedy. FreeRepublic has covered countless other events just as well -- most notably, the Clinton scandals.
You do good work, Jim Robinson, and so do those you assist you.

Where is the Radio FreeRepublic chat room? Do you have a link?
To: RobFromGa
do you really think that the shuttle tragedy would have been discussed and reported better within a "Generic Daily Discussion Thread"? I beg to differ; that is EXACTLY what leadpenny's thread was. A thread you see on here thousands of times with ordinary people discussing an ongoing event.

This site is cutting edge. Yes it is. But only, apparently, because it has the right stuff: a leader who has vision, and a moderator force to clean up the garbage.

--We ARE a wire service! --
With as many Freepers out there as there are we are far better than a wire service. If it happens in the US or abroad if you are on FReeRepublic at the time you should know about it.
I was reading about the shuttle as is happened on FR yesterday and was proud and sad all at the same time.
My family always gets on me for hanging out here.It was kinda like I was exonerated

This is the link to the Radio FreeRepublic chat room:

This chat server uses either a Java based client or any IRC compliant client like mIRC, see that page for details.

Thanks for the ping, Gramps. I'm reading the thread now.
As I was reading that thread yesterday morning, my goosebumps had goosebumps! It was very chilling.
To leadpenny, Gramps, and everyone on Free Republic I send you all a big ol'

So who spelled "descent" as "decent"? It doesn't sound as though a writer for the WSJ would do so, but sounds all too like a typical poster here. Too bad FR has to show its illiterate side to the world at the same time as getting accolades for being quick. Don't get series on us; weir not all loosers.

Other Freepers joined in, describing the view of the descending shuttle from the West Coast--then gradually realizing something was amiss. Someone asks at 8:58 a.m. EST, "Was it glowing at all?" The first clear sign of trouble comes in a post at 9:05 a.m. We won't quote any more than this, because you really have to read the full thread to appreciate the drama. If anyone comes to FR to read this thread, will they also follow the links to what the DUmmies were saying? Let's all hope so! It wasn't pretty!
