African-Americans drowning in wave of illegal immigration
Houston Chronicle ^ | February 2, 2003 | TERRY ANDERSON

Posted on 02/02/2003 8:55:55 AM PST by Dog Gone

THE black community has made great strides in the last few decades. Racism has certainly not been eradicated, but it is no longer accepted with a wink and a nod as it once was. We are proud to see Secretary of State Colin Powell, even when we do not agree with everything he does. The same with Condoleezza Rice, the president's national security adviser, and many others.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that in some regions we black folks are so overwhelmed by the huge numbers of immigrants that we are being displaced in our schools, jobs and neighborhoods.

That may seem a harsh thing for a black person to say against brown people, but I don't see it that way. I am an American, proud of both my nation and my race. What I see in my community of South Central Los Angeles -- where I have lived nearly all my life -- is thousands of Mexicans who care nothing about our traditions and culture, and only want to impose their way on us. That's not immigration, that is invasion.

It is sad what has happened in my neighborhood. This was a respectable, blue-collar area of hard-working black folks living in their bungalows and going to their jobs. In just a couple decades it has become almost entirely Mexican. They live several families to a three-bedroom house and keep chickens in the yard, but the city doesn't care about the zoning violations or the noise of having so many crowded into a small space.

According to the Census Bureau, nearby Watts is now 60 percent Hispanic, and it was previously the black community on the West Coast. No longer.

The immigration situation is really hard on our young people. A 17-year-old kid on my street couldn't get a job at McDonald's because he didn't speak Spanish. Another young neighbor boy was thrown into a bilingual classroom at age 8 and was forced to listen to Spanish all day long. His six-hour school day was turned into three hours. When his mother asked for an English-only class, she was told "there are none."

Would you believe that I, a black man, have been called a racist many times for speaking up against this invasion? I have a radio program on the subject and therefore hear from a lot of people, even some in Mexico.

When they call me a racist, I put this question to them: What if a hundred thousand Vietnamese were suddenly dropped into Guadalajara? And what if those newcomers didn't speak Spanish, and further insisted that their children be taught in Vietnamese? What would you think if they were happy to work for half the normal wages for any job they could get, thereby putting thousands of your local Guadalajarans out of work? Would it be racist to say there was a problem?

When people of good will and good sense hear the situation put that way, nearly all understand and respect my viewpoint.

Now if only they would listen in Washington. America's political leaders are the problem. They have been selling out this great nation for real and imaginary political benefits while ignoring the dangers. Even after Sept. 11, nothing has been done to plug up our borders. Another terrorist attack could be 10 times worse, and it would likely happen because Congress and the president learned nothing about the need to keep the nation's borders secure.

If I sound angry, you hear right. Like other Americans, I want immigration to be legal, controlled and reduced. But as a black American, I see that the burden my people must carry is heavier than for many others. I am sure that if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were alive, he would understand the fundamental unfairness to the black community of allowing more immigration than the nation can handle.

DG: Thank Eminem for that... everyone plays rap and other hiphop. Even the spanish language stations sometimes play the really popular rap, and the rock stations play the popular rap stuff. If I hear another Enimen song, I'm going to throw up

Indeed ...my lack of appreciation and even scorn for that genre of music is one of the primary indicators of my middle age. I long for the "black" music of my youth which meant primarily Delta Bluesmen, Jazz, Motown, Muscle Shoals and all that good old stuff. A bygone era I fear. Whoever claims art imitates life has not observed hip hop trends. The reverse is now as true as the other.

She was a widow in her 70s and was probably the only one I knew come to think of it. Now, down around Redlands or Homestead or out on Krome, it was more likely to meet a Miami Southron.

Not too many Southrons in Florida period south of Lake Ockechobee anymore.

Does Manhattan still have the proliferation of Korean corner markets?

When I lived on Nassau in 1982, I had to walk up to Chambers to an all night Korean market to buy coffin nails. A cold walk in mid winter...but of course jonesing for a pack of Reds is a strong motivator...lol....glad I switched to La Gloria Cubanas.....cold turkey is much more managable.

I think what you meant was that throughout history, civilizations have changed and evolved and migrations have occured which have altered societies over and over again. It is a fact, although it's not always pleasant for the people affected. For those putting down your words, it's like shooting the messenger.

I believe that in less than 100 years, America will hardly resemble the America of today.

If you look at the LAPD Most Wanted lists, you'll see relatively few blacks, they are far far outnumbered by those "hard-working, hard-studying" immigrants. Much of our crime is now imported.

I took a look at LAPD Most Wanted, and you are right. Most faces and names seem Hispanic. (And, by FBI policy, will be counted as "white" perpetrators in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports)

"Illegal aliens please there is no such thing as a illegal immigrant. An Immigrant comes through customs with visa in hand and a desire to become a citizen."

So you live on what planet? Maybe Uranus?

Is that a good thing? Many of us with children aren't too thrilled.

This country has markedly declined culturally since my youth in the 50s and 60s when things were alleged to have been awful especially in my home state (dreaded favorite whipping boy Mississippi).

I don't think the future looks too bright personally. Balkanization is hardly inconcievable here.

Jesse has always tended toward shameless tall tales, yet he used to get away with it because in small numbers, he would tell young black children to study, to work on their education; but he, has long since stopped explaining to kids how they must prepare themselves for law-abiding opportunity.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, during her recent ill-fated Maryland gubernatorial campaign asserted that ‘Slavery was based on race; lynching was based on race; discrimination was based on race; affirmative action should be based on race.’

She was (with uncharacteristic candor) repeating the democrat mantra that black people must be kept in their place (i.e., dependent on the largesse of the democrat power brokers). Slavery, lynching, and discrimination are no longer socially acceptable ways to keep blacks from achieving (and anyway, in order to be implemented they don’t involve the essential ingredient: government largesse). But affirmative action (the acceptance of the belief that blacks cannot make it on their own, and must receive special consideration in order to do so) is (socially acceptable, among leftists, that is) -- simply because it involves the implementation of patronizing federal programs, and the maintenance of a system of social dependence.

Leftists have pinned all manner of labels on blacks who achieve (without the help of government power brokers, that is). Harry Belafonte called Colin Powell ‘akin to a slave.’ Alicia Banks called Clarence Thomas ‘an inept, unqualified Supreme Court n*gg*r.’ (She also used the same offensive ‘n word’ in describing Powell.) The list of derogatory epithets is endless ….

Over the past forty years, the democrat party (most notably, and most recently, the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesses Jackson, Kwesei Mfume, et al) have used American blacks for the party’s ends. They have sent a clear (and, unfortunately, generally embraced) message that they (and their social pandering/handouts) are the answer to what is seen as black underachievement.

The fact that many blacks have continued to underachieve because they have followed the teachings (and unsubstantiated rantings) of these duplicitous pipers is sad enough. But another sickening outcome of the self-serving leftist lies is that genuine achievers (Condoleeza Rice, Michael Anderson, Walter Williams, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Alan Keyes ….) are often seen as traitors to their race.

Booker T. Washington warned, ‘There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs -- partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.’

Koreans still own many vegetable markets/delis, although they seem to hire a lot of Mexicans to do all of the drudge work these days, Korean kids tending to go to College and all that. Additionally, I've noticed more and more "corner stores" owned by Bangladeshis recently.

The twenty-four hour coffee shops/diners, thankfully, remain Greek.

Today's black youth consider rap music made a week ago, to be OLD SCHOOL. I think many kids, black and white, wouldn't know serious black music if it hit them in the face. Now the hippest thing to do is to do a "cover" of old songs or to "sample" old music and put them to rapping and rhyming. What they really are saying is gee we have no talent so we'll steal other people's music. These same people turn around and accuse Elvis of stealing black music and imitating black rockers.

I care nothing for rap most of the time. Maybe I will listen to the most popular stuff, but I am not a big fan of the genre. They wear that silly pants (that was invented in jail by the way) and stupid clothing. And now the girls... the girls are trash. Black music used to have such class.

Anyway, I have a theory as to why people abandoned disco music. It's too happy and positive, too non-racialized. Also, why people hate it when I play house, and new wave at my job. If you listen to rap too long, you get either angry or depressed.

Take all ethnic and racial references out of any thoughts on illegal immigration, which is killing the country we know. It is a tactic the Left welcomes, because they can obscure the truth by claiming "racism."

Illegals are not bad news because they are Mexicans. They are bad news and a ton of trouble because they are ILLEGAL."

Neither, really, should one place any blame on the millions of illegals. They are here because anyone with half-a-brain would try to escape the Turd World Mexucan hellholes into which they were born. They are here as instruments of their government's foreign policy. For the corrupt, ineffective and incredibly cunning Mexican oligarchy, it's just simple common sense. Instead of them feeding these masses at ruinous expense, their government makes many billions out of the remittance payments they send back to Mexico. We pay their wages, welfare bills, education bills, and medical bills. $10 Billion in CA alone. Just our bad luck to be next door.

The illegals are here because it is just our bad luck to live in an age where we allow our government to break the law, just like any illegal wetback. The blame is squarely on our government. Thus, the blame is on each of us. Our government is allowing these people to break our laws with impunity, because we have not done enough to make our government stop.

I confess that I found Kid Rock's "Cowboy" amusing all the while understanding that it is rap hybrid.

I heard Eminem a few weeks ago driving home from work....I listened for a few minutes....he has a knack for rhyme and that doomsday sounding downbeat riff he uses that sounds a bit maniacal probably appeals to frustrated testosterone laden teen boys all strutting around trying to maske their insecurities.....but the thuggishness and complete lack of respect for anything but money and getting laid it implies leaves me cold and depressed.

Girls in rap seem often utter rhyme overlaid with the moans of getting laid. Ugh....I'm glad my own girls prefer punkier prep/thrash music. They know I loathe rap, I'm sure they'll hide it from me if they decide to indulge.

Today's youth culture is a sure sign of the Decline and Fall days. It was bad enough when I was young at times and folks warned us then but wow....we just keep on spiraling downward...for how long?

I was in my SUV tonight with my kids sitting in a parking lot while my wife did the tanning booth thing and I had on Hendrix's Rainbow Bridge of which the Pali Gap instrumental is one of my favorites and I wondered listening as to how would today's black culture would view him now. He was an enigma then and while not listened to much by blacks unless they were the rare black hippie, he was not scorned for his psychdelic blues. Maybe he'd be like Lenny Kravitz....semi viewed as black though nearly all his record buyers are probably young white girls. (I know Kravitz is half white)....like Prince but now Prince has gone black more or less with more R&B and less rock.

Just wondering. Hendrix was indeed phenomenal

My multi disc CD player had Billy Joe Shaver (with Waylon and Emmy Lou Harris), Lou Reed Rock and Roll Animal, Hendrix, Grateful Dead American Beauty, Led Zepplin BBC sessions, and The North Mississippi All-Stars.........middle aged eclectic taste...lol

People who complain about rap music lyrics must not be listening to the lyrics of the narco-corrido groups which are extremely popular with the Mexican immigrants. Groups like Los Tigres del Norte and others who glorify the gunning down of law enforcement agents and drug smuggling, or Lupillo Rivera who openinly praise cocaine use. And Mexican rap is more violent than American rap. Even in Mexico, they've banned the music of Los Tigres del Norte and some of these other groups but it doesn't stop their popularity.

Yes --it's important to distinguish between "American" and "foreign". Protecting Americans of all colors should be the priority of our government.

Also people forget or they never realized that in the past 1 out of 3 immigrants from Europe returned home in a short time often because they couldn't assimilate that easily but the giant welfare state we now have makes that less likely so the unassimilating will stay and we will accomodate them by offering them welfare in their own language. "Immigrants" from Africa didn't have the same option to return home. Around here they can't build housing projects fast enough for the new immigrants and you won't hear English spoken in them at all.

Also Fox has made it clear his government still has jurisdiction over these people, something we haven't seen with other immigrant groups and their governments. Fox's people are to be given access to all services and jobs according to him but are exempt from our death penalty and other laws.
