Most of the world is grieving, but some say 'God has retaliated'
02/02/2003
The Washington Post
LONDON Much of the world expressed shock, grief and condolences Saturday for the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew, but some in the Arab world saw the tragedy as divine justice against the United States and Israel.
< snip >
But on the streets of Baghdad, Iraq, where many are braced for U.S. military action, some said the loss of the shuttle and its crew was God's retribution.
"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar Quraishi told Reuters news service. "God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us."
Noting that among the dead was Col. Ramon, a fighter pilot who participated in a 1981 bombing attack that destroyed an Iraqi nuclear reactor, car mechanic Mohammed Jaber Tamini said: "Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason. Now time has come, and God has retaliated to their aggression."

If that's your limited perception of God, I would strongly suggest you engage in some serious Biblical study and perhaps correspond with your theologian.
Of course! You are right. I'm on my way right now to talk to my priest about my errant thinking! (These next months are going to shock many of us)

An accident? God is all powerful. There is no such thing as an accident that God is unable to prevent.
Take your logic far enough and one encounters the fact that if Adolf Hitler had dropped dead of a cerebral hemmorage in 1940, millions of undeniably innocent lives would have been saved.
I'm personally an agnostic leaning towards deist, but I've always considered that to be pretty definite proof that if there is a Supreme Being it doesn't routinely involve itself in the day to day affairs of man.

Joyfull, I fear God. I understand God sometimes punishes wrongdoers for their sins. And yes, sometimes God also punishes nations for their sins. One only needs to read the books of Exodus, Joshua and Judges for examples.
But God's punishments are typically tailor made to send clear messages. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, but only after God made it clear those cities did not contain ONE righteous man. Israel was overcome after following false gods only after God sent numerous prophets with clear warnings. Disrespectful priests were killed while in the act of being disrespectful. No one knows the mind of God, but I would guess God would not punish innocent astronauts for abortion and cloning. Rather, I would guess He would punih abortionists and cloners.
The book of Job makes it clear that God doen't like people to attribute all tragedy to His punishments, as does the incident with the blind man Jesus healed. Part of fearing God includes heeding these messages.

Do you ascribe the death of every person who is injured or dies in any accident to God's wrath ?
I THINK you are one SICK puppy who wishes for bad things to happen to other people so you may revel in your interpretation of God's will.

You sound like one of Jobs buddies, who sat around and told him that his horrible afflictions were an act of God caused by his sin.
They were actually an act of Satan and because of Jobs refusal to curse God for the horrible things that were happened to him he was rewarded in the end.
Read the book of Job.
Yes God allowed Satan to do the things he did but, he knew Job would not curse him.
God does what God does. who are we to question him?
Don't try to get people to curse God!

Appreciate your civil post, but weren't young children and innocant babies also destroyed in Sodom? God destroyed them as well. What do you say about that?

God did not make death, and takes no pleasure in the destruction of any living thing; He created all things that they might have being. (Wisdom of Solomon 1-13)
For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord God; so turn and live. (Ezekiel 18:32)

Or God is removing His hand of protection from America. Why should God shed His grace on America with behavior so apallingly perverted. (Legal baby killing, homosexual unions sanctioned, rampant drug and alcohol abuse, popular entertainment media, ect ect ect)Most of the visitors to this website have taken strong stances against baby killing, homosexuals, rampant abuse, and the entertainment media. IMHO, you're preaching to the choir and blaming this horrible tragedy as God's punishment for behavior of Americans is most sacrilegious. Frankly, it sounds like something Clinton would have said after September 11.

Thanks for the very pertinent links and graph...
I was actually referencing the day they meet they're maker in the afterlife. Then they'll be sent to the gates of Hades. Then they'll wish they hadn't done that...

"Frankly, it sounds like something Clinton would have said after September 11." Show me JUST ONE inference where B.J. Clinton even so much as "hinted" that homosexuality was wrong or even implied hollywood was poisoning the minds of America's youth, and I'll give you the Golden Freeper Award.
