This is the picture that Rintense and I have seen...from the WFAA video...you can see the shuttle from the REAR clearly, and it is traveling from FRAME RIGHT TO FRAME LEFT--look closely, you can certainly see the shuttle's main engines at the rear, also the PROFILE of the shuttle from underneath...and in the video, it's moving in the direction of the left wing...

not to single you out, but this repetitive posting of the same *huge* pictures on thread after thread, without those pictures being of any informational or probative value whatsoever, is simply pissing away bandwidth and slowing everything down, and i, for one, would very much like to see it discouraged. For the sake of accuracy, it consumes the poster's bandwidth, not FR's. Yes, it may take a bit longer for the picture itself to load on individual users' machines, but it's not taxing a FR resource at all because the picture pulls straight from the poster's server.

Trouble started on left-wing. That was the one hit on launch.

NASA: "loss of tire pressure" (left side gear)
"excessive structural heating".

It certainly does appear that the Shuttle was sideways at that point.
Maybe it's not what it appears to be, or maybe there's some great explanation for that, but when I saw the video, I had the same reaction.

Fantastic post! #28. You can see a jet shooting out of left wing.

I think these will prove to be glare off the shuttle, refracted off the lens of the camera, not an actual picture of the shuttle's detail. In that footage, the glare disappears a second or so after this picture, and all that can be seen is a pinpoint of intense light, which is the shuttle.

That is simply the out of focus image of the bright spot where Columbia is. It is not in any way a close-up of the shuttle. It is extremely out of focus. What you are seeing is the outline of the iris diaphram in the lens of the video camera. Anything you see resembling a "shuttle" is your imagination running wild.

It looked a lot clearer in the live feed on Fox.
This looks like a UFO.
