I remember the day Kennedy was shot. Walter Chronkite says that some woman called into CBS to complain he wasn't in a tie & coat. What he's wearing is irrelevant.

(We've got Armadillos in our trousers. It's really quite frightening.)

It's strange the things people notice in times of stress and shock.

Some of the home videos I've seen already today are more descriptive that the standard new footage.

Thanks for the flag. FOX says the vehicle was travelling at Mach 18 at the time.
Still waiting on more info on the wheel-well temp or tire pressure, etc.
Recall on STS-1 when a number of tiles popped off at launch? The Air Force used some special cameras in Hawaii to look at the bottom of the shuttle. I wonder if they did that this time?
(The Columbia does not carry an RMS [the robot arm] with a camera on SpaceLab missions.)

Questions will be taken at the 3 PM briefing out of JSC

Oh, I know. It really makes no difference what he's wearing. I was listening to what he was saying and how his voice choked up. And so did I.

This just serves as a graphic reminder that NASA is not involved in fun and games. The things they do involve life and death.

Perhaps that freeper meant Wearing a coat and tie used to be a sign of respect or remorse in a situation like this. They could have been prepared with coat and tie ready for a situation like this.
I am so sick of freepers around here having to correct every little thing that someone posts with their own personal feelings. It is not irrelevant to that poster. to you perhaps but who asked for your thoughts on it? Please people stop looking for a fight on every thread.

my apologies .. this is just a horrible day...i really can't believe it's happened again. We all know how dangerous space travel is, but they are so good we just are taking it for granted ... it's a very sad day
To: ksen
I hope that they can find the reason why Columbia broke up, but right now I'm in mourning for the seven astronauts who died today.
I was devastated after Challenger and I'm devastated now.

Our homeschooling group is taking a trip to KSC next month and will visit with the astronauts. I think that trip may have more impact on them after today.

I thought it was irrelevant and said so--and I wasn't the first. Are YOU trying to start a flame war? If so, knock it off.

Too easily people get lulled into thinking that technology is routine. With efforts as complex as this, you always walk shoulder-to-shoulder with disaster.
Tough are the soles that tread the knife's edge.
