Here in upstate NY it is similar to the Challenger, as schoolchildren were following this flight closer than others. There was an ant experiment on board from Fowler High School in Syracuse.

OMG! Am I hearing correctly? Are they suspecting some kind of missle shootdown?
To: Moonman62
Communications were garbled and static? Anyone know if that's normal during this part of the landing?
To: GRRRRR
I live in souteast and I heard a noise, not loud, that I thought was an explosion. Our windows rattled.
Now I wonder if it was the shuttle.
What I heard lasted for probably 10-15 seconds.

MSNBC, after first showing the shuttle explosion, said they were cutting to mission control at NASA when a male voice came on and said (almost word for word and in a "light" voice), "the Japanese shot it down because they thought Howard Stern was aboard"- MSNBC quickly cut to real NASA official. Bizarre and nauseating joker...how could someone patch into the MSNBC feed?

And the one thing that's gonna make me vomit faster is the thought of celebrations going on in the other Palestine right now. Yes, there will be dancing in the streets of Ramallah, if there isn't already.
Given that if this was indeed a terrorist act, the Government would never tell us so, Americans will always suspect as such...Israeli...over Texas (Bush).
Damn damn damn damn damn damn

They are warning people in the area not to avoid touching anything in the debris field.

Tuesday was the 17th anniversary of the Challenger explosion and this crew held a memorial on board.
To: lavaroise
I was thinking the same thing... but the question is what the inciting cause was.
Obviously the vehicle broke up... the entire space shuttle system is now down.
Who is the crew up on the space station?
They may need to bring the crew down via Soyuz.

They do, but a NASA interviewee said that they were too high to use the escape system.
