What about the pilot module? Could it survive breakup at 200,000 feet and Mach25?

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth.
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings,
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind i've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Just went outside and looked. Could see nothing in the sky. could hear large amount of helicopters in the sky to the southeast.
I'm sick. I watched the Challenger from Dick Scobee's son's squadron at the Air Force Academy. This sucks.

Has the insulation story been confirmed. I hadn't heard about some hitting the leading edge of the wing on takeoff.

Hate to say it, but cnn has better coverage than fox.CNN always has better coverage than FOX on ANYTHING to do with real news. The first thing I did was switch from FOX to CNN.
Not "Sad to say"...FOX needs to know this. They are seriously lacking on real news coverage...Not even CLOSE to CNN.

Texas TV station was shooting video of reentry and recorded multiple tails.

In Orlando...we hear the sonic booms as it approaches KSC (around 40 mi away). If they hear it in Dallas...that is not good.
Oh my God....pray for the astronauts

I'm watching CNN. I think what I see is the Shuttle breaking up. This is horrible. No way to bail out. God be with them. They are coming home.

Just heard that there's no 'bail out' procedure at that altitude...very bad news.

After seeing the tracking map on Fox News, I went outside to see if I could see the Shuttle a minute or two before 9AM. I saw a multiple contrail-like steaks to the South of Dallas on the same path I saw the Shuttle some time ago in a night landing. Bad news I fear!
To: Clovis_Skeptic
Dude, its at 200,000 feet over Dallas. Too high to survive anything at Mach 6.
To: GRRRRR
First Israeli in space and the shuttle is vaporized at 200,000 feet?
This really sucks!

CNN is certainly beating CBS News. CBS's report, which I just heard on the radio, only said contact was lost, said nothing else was known.
