A weather radar shows the debris swath as the shuttle broke apart. Click here
1715 GMT (12:15 p.m. EST)
Debris is scattered across a wide area of Texas. NASA is asking that any persons finding debris should stay clear given the hazardous nature of the materials and alert local authorities.
1710 GMT (12:10 p.m. EST)
Here is the NASA statement:
A Space Shuttle contingency has been declared in Mission Control, Houston, as a result of the loss of communication with the Space Shuttle Columbia at approximately 9 a.m. EST Saturday as it descended toward a landing at the Kennedy Space Center, Fla. It was scheduled to touchdown at 9:16 a.m. EST.
Communication and tracking of the shuttle was lost at 9 a.m. EST at an altitude of about 203,000 feet in the area above north central Texas. At the time communications were lost. The shuttle was traveling approximately 12,500 miles per hour (Mach 18). No communication and tracking information were received in Mission Control after that time.
Search and rescue teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth and in portions of East Texas have been alerted. Any debris that is located in the area that may be related to the Space Shuttle contingency should be avoided and may be hazardous as a result of toxic propellants used aboard the shuttle. The location of any possible debris should immediately be reported to local authorities.
Flight controllers in Mission Control have secured all information, notes and data pertinent to today's entry and landing by Space Shuttle Columbia and continue to methodically proceed through contingency plans.
More information will be released as it becomes available.
1700 GMT (12:00 p.m. EST)
The NASA news conference by Administrator Sean O'Keefe is planned for 1 p.m. EST.

This thread needs to be saved as a piece of symbolic history on FR of the last moments of Columbia.
To: leadpenny
I've heard a report (no confirmation) that debris has been found as far west as New Mexico.

No, I didnt mean any insult, I just felt sorry for LEadpenny! If I started a thread on a historical event, and the event turned into a tragedy, I would just feel awful about it, that's all I meant!
To: leadpenny
Thought this would be worth adding for location purposes.

No, movement would have been from upper left to lower right (Northwest to Southeast).

The location of the "streak" depends on where the radar was located. This shot appears to be centered in Austin. I've locally seen a shot of Houston's radar. The other threads have had a shot from Dallas based radar.
I heard a comment from the mayor of Fairfield about the event (they were keeping an eye out for debris, I think I heard that they did see the incident). Fairfield is about halfway between Houston and Dallas.

"What a very weird coincidence that the one time I sit down to watch a shuttle landing, this happens."Not a good day for the USA. But I am curious nevertheless. Did you only sit down one time to watch the Oakland Raiders play football?

Thanks to the brave men and women put their lives on the line every day to make this world a better place.
I said it earlier but I wish to say it again.
I hope and pray that the deaths of Columbia and it's crew is a beginning not a end.
The beginning of more exploration of space, the beginning of a new spaceship that will be able to make a low earth orbit something more routine then we have today.
It has been too long since man set foot on the moon. I pray the President Bush makes a effort to give America the first big push to space travel so more people can look upon the beautiful world God created.
I want a bricklayer, a secetary, a accountant, a mechanic, ect, to fasten his seat belt and hold on for the ultimate amusement ride.
America needs some good goals to achieve.
