MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy wants to help thaw relations between the United States and Cuba with ice cream -- Ben & Jerry's in particular. Leahy, in Cuba for a weeklong visit, said he discussed human rights, health care and Kosovo with Cuban President Fidel Castro on Sunday. The two also hotly debated which country's ice cream was better.

"Now my major diplomatic effort will be to get a hold of Ben Cohen and figure out how they can send down a case of Ben & Jerry's," Leahy said, referring to the Vermont-based company's co-founder. "Castro made me promise I would get Ben & Jerry's ice cream to him."

Leahy couldn't remember which brand of Cuban ice cream Castro was extolling.

"Ice cream truly is the universal language," Ben & Jerry's spokeswoman Christie Heimert said. After checking with Jerry Greenfield, the company's other co-founder, she added: "He would love to know what President Castro's favorite flavor is."
