Mysteriously so, perhaps. (It's more a matter of a common ideological spirit than materialistic string-pulling, I think.)

Even better than that, Robert Mugabe enjoys the support of Nelson Mandela and the country of South Africa.

Just a guess, but maybe Mandela is pitching a fit because none of the AIDS money Pres. Bush offered will be going through Mandela and Clinton's aidstrust.org.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa has begun hearing evidence from Jerry Richardson, a former close associate of Winnie Madikizela Mandela. Mr Richardson is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of the 14 year old activist, Stompie Muketsi Sepei, in the late 1980s. The Truth Commission is currently investigating the role of Mrs Mandela in past crimes, and she's expected to testify later today. From Johannesburg, here's Peter Biles:
Jerry Richardson was the one-time coach of the former Mandela United football club, Mrs Mandela's personal vigilante gang. The football team is said to have conducted a reign of terror in Soweto in the latter stages of the apartheid era.

Mr Richardson said that if anyone in the township was labelled a sellout, there was nothing he could do, that person would have to be killed. Mr Richardson said that Mrs Mandela was the decision-maker and gave all the orders.

He described one killing, in which he said he slit a young woman's throat and dumped the body. Again, this was said to have been on the orders of Mrs Mandela.

Mr Richardson was then asked about the abduction of five boys, including 14 year old Stompie Muketsi Sepei. Mr Richardson was given a life sentence in 1991 for murdering Stompie, while Mrs Mandela was convicted of kidnapping the teenager.

Today, in an emotionally charged atmosphere, Mr Richardson said he threw Stompie in the air several times and let him fall to the ground, while Mrs Mandela watched. He said Stompie was also kicked like a ball.

He was certain the boy would die as a result. The next morning, said Mr Richardson, it was his view that Stompie should be finished off.

He said he had killed Stompie on Mrs Mandela's instructions. Winnie Madikizela Mandela listened to Mr Richardson's evidence in silence.

She's expected to give her account of what happened either later today or on Thursday.

Do you have a reference for this? I spent a couple of weeks in Capetown last October, and the people I dealt with (mostly Afrikaners) seemed content.

South Africa does have a high crime rate. White farmers in the "outback" (veldt?) are being murdered, which is obviously causing some disquietitude. Capetown itself has a crime problem.

However, property values in Capetown are rising due to Americans and Europeans moving there due to the low cost of living.

South Africa is no Nirvana; nor is it Zimbabwe.

I think you are referring to Zimbabwe, not South Africa.

Are we supposed to take this guy seriously when he states that Iraq produces 64% of the world's crude? I admit I don't know the figure but there is NO WAY it is in the neighborhood of 64%. You can whine and moan all you want Mr. Mandela but you better get your facts straight before intelligent people will give you the time of day!!

You forgot Socialist!!

More importantly he forgot racist. While I don't currently think the plan of attacking Iraq is a good one, the chances that it's being done because the Secretary-Idiot of the UN is black is equivalent to the chances I'll win every state lottery sequentially.

I so intensely dislike people who view everything through race-colored glasses ! I once that Mandela was a hero. I know better now.

He can go straight to hell.

"Speaking at the International Women's Forum, Mandela said "if there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America."

Naturally, Mandela went on to praise the positive policies of rape, political murder, and the confiscation of private farms to serve as gifts for the cronies of Mugabe in neighboring Zimbabwe...

He was also a terrorist himself. He blew up trains, people were killed etc. He didn't spend 27 years on Robbons Island for nothing. BTW, I loved your lottery reference.

Bush: Say, Tony, how much money have our two governments given that Mandela feller over the past 10 years?

Blair: Offhand, George, I'd say "too much".
