Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, distinguished guests, fellow citizens:
Every year, by law and by custom, we meet here to consider the state of the union. This year, we gather in this chamber deeply aware of decisive days that lie ahead.
You and I serve our country in a time of great consequence. During this session of Congress, we have the duty to reform domestic programs vital to our country and we have the opportunity to save millions of lives abroad from a terrible disease. We will work for a prosperity that is broadly shared and we will answer every danger and every enemy that threatens the American people.
In all these days of promise and days of reckoning, we can be confident. In a whirlwind of change, and hope, and peril, our faith is sure, our resolve is firm, and our union is strong.

Economics: I'm convinced the Dems have "NO REAL ALTERNATIVE" except that the government needs more money and that means raising taxes.
The response sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You didn't miss much, no real surprises.
I liked that he called for an end to partial-birth abortion AND a ban of human cloning.
However, it was the same old crapola on the economy: lower taxes, increase social spending. Not a peep about the Trade Deficit or illegal immigration. And he's gonna give a couple billion in corporate welfare to the automotive industry to develop a hydrogen car! Sheesh, I thought I was listening to Algore. Dang tax cuts are just gonna "trickle down" to Mexico or China, and Americans will be left buried deeper in debt.
He made a good case for attacking Saddam Hussein, but still left me wondering why he's piddled around so long trying to get U.N. approval to do it. If Saddam is developing nukes, we oughta just give him a front row view of why it isn't wise to do so. The Japanese rebuilt Hiroshima and Nagasaki. No reason the same couldn't be done with Baghdad.
He has really wandered off the reservation on prescription drugs under Medicare and sending $15 BILLION to Africa. All after calling for fiscal responsibility.
He missed the vital part of any discussion on Homeland Security, which is, HS will never be achieved so long as we continue to have a free-for-all on our borders.
Other than those few things, I thought he did a good job.
"And many others have met a different fate. Let's put it this way: They are no longer a problem to the United States and our friends and allies."
"...free people will set the course of history. "
"Your enemy is not surrounding your country, your enemy is ruling your country. "
"The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world; it is God's gift to humanity. "
"May He guide us now, and may God continue to bless the United States of America. "
-President Bush, State of the Union Address 2003
I suppose so. At least he didn't make any major blunders in his pronunciation of the English language that were memorable. And while I'm personally partial to light-blue as a color, I think he should've ditched the tie for one that's red. IMHO, red ties are more conservative and professional looking.
On a more substantive level, there were some disturbing points. I'm not happy about subsidizing more health care for people here or anywhere else. I have the energy to make the sacrifices to keep America free, but I don't have the energy to keep paying for things that others should be doing for themselves. I hear many people espouse the virtues of hydrogen cars, but when I ask a few simple questions that I remember from thermodynamics, they don't have answers. I'm not against hydrogen cars, but right now they seem to be another technological messiah whose coming we are supposed to await.
Overall, I still liked the speech and like President Bush. He's being the president that he promised to be. The biggest problems that I have with him are problems with where the American people are in their view of the country and their lives. He's simply responding to these weaknesses and not trying to break some bad ideas that too many people support. I recognize that there are only so many bad ideas that any one president can fight.

Bill
Nah, he should have had a Rush tie (the ultimate power tie!) on.
LVM
Is El Rushbo still peddling those?
I haven't seen one of them since he dumped his TV show.
I vaguely recall them being a little loud for my personal taste.
But I suppose one of 'em could have been better than that light-blue tie that Dubya was wearing.
Not that I dislike light-blue, but IMHO, that goes better with a light colored summertime suit.
It just seemed out of place and too "cold" to be wearing with a dark suit in winter. Especially at such a formal occasion.
