This was followed by Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, who asserted that basic fundamental human rights of Muslims in America were being violated. He said there is radical distrust as a result of how America has dealt with 9-11: arresting people without trial, torture at U.S. airbases and how prisoners are being treated at Guantanamo Bay. When "progresive" NGO's get cited, there is an agenda. When said NGO starts crying about treatment of muslims (small "m" until they start flushing out the "klansmen" among them) in America, then we slop over from agenda to propaganda. Now we have U.S. airbases cast in the role of Inquisitional chambers? Doubtless there's no intentional agitation in that kind of assertion!
I guess we just all need to get along (and go along) with Allah, Mohammed and the current prophets (as easily spelled "profits") in this brave new world, otherwise everyone else will think we're just plain mean. Well, to be honest, I am getting more and more mean each day I have to read how America needs to capitulate to her international/financial/Islamic betters.

Kinda' depends upon you definition of "the good", no?
Religionists have had a monopoly on morality for the last several thousand years, which is why we have all these wars based on "my God is better than your god".
Maybe someday we will arrive at a morality based upon the necessities of man's life on earth.

Thank God that the US is going in an opposite direction from most of the world. I wouldn't have it any other way. Notice how the author refused to detail the speaches of Ashcroft and others who defended our great country.

Maybe someday we will arrive at a morality based upon the necessities of man's life on earth. Such a hope is one which is founded on sinking sand...utopian dreams which have proven futile again and again throughout history.
America's foundations are rooted in something far more firm.

When I saw that part of his article, I stopped reading it.
We are on a huge change in our world re power, politics and focus on the future. The socialists appear to be losing it around a large part of the world.

"...there is growing concern that America is going one way while the world goes in another direction." The price of leadership.
Sometimes, the timid and ignorant don't want to follow. In which case, history is best served by their getting out of the way...

The only problem with this piece is that Tocqueville never said the quote the author attributes to him.
I wouldn't say that was the
only problem with this very problematic article... but thanks for pointing this out. I just read Democracy in America and I don't remember seeing this anywhere. I do recall that de Tocqueville believed that a product of American democracy was goodness.
Another starter for complaint with this article is Lewis Lapham. Although he took an 8-year sabatical during the Clinton years, he's been hating America his entire career. With Clinton he was merely cynical. With Reagan, Bush & Bush, he's downright treasonous.

The islamists blow up the WTC, and the Pentagon, the elitists in Davos proclaim: Muslims good, America bad. America frees the Afghans from terrorism, and wants to do the same to the Iraqis, the elitists in Davos proclaim: America has lost it's way. France, and germany opposes the USA from liberating the Iraqis from saddam's cruelty, france, and germany have found the right way. What is the world coming to?
