Michelle Malkin/Ricardo Pimental debate
myself ^ | 1/26/2003 | Myself

I had the pleasure of attending a debate featuring Michelle Malkin and Ricardo Pimental. I did get a couple of good pics, along with finding out just how stunning Ms. Malkin is. Believe me, pictures do not do her justice. Especially since I was nervous and my hands were shaking while trying to take her picture. It helped I had a sign that said "Free Republic loves Michelle." I showed her the sign, she laughed, I asked for pictures, and she was nice enough to oblige.

The debate was current border policy, vs tightening down as much as possible on illegal immigration. Mr Ricardo took the narrow position of tighter immigration policy hurting illegal but hard working Mexicans, while Ms. Malkin talked about the broader issue of 9/11 showing the dangers of current immigration policy. Mr. Pimental did come across as being pretty well informed about the narrow issue, well spoken, and had a rather self-deprecating sense of humor.

Ms. Malkin was very articulate, did a good job of rebutting Mr. Picardo, though she did get caught once, and was left speechless when Mr. Pimental asked her how a National Guardsmen would be able to stop an Al Quada terrorist when he has trouble stopping an Illegal Mexican who barely has an 8th grade education.

I was surprised at the turnout and I wound up sitting in the lobby, watching on closed circuit tv. But, showing up late allowed me to get my pics of Ms. Malkin, so it was worth the price of admission.

If anyone cares for more detail about the debate, let me know, I have several pages of notes and I will write something a little more in depth.

One thing Ms. Malkin said which brought quite a round of applause, "A nation without borders is not a nation."

The debate was interesting, and both speakers actually engaged in dialogue and counter dialogue, without resorting to the personal attacks which seem to typify a lot of what passes for debate these days.

A Pimental pimento - will that be gin or vodka?

Anybody who advocates erasing the sovereignty of our national borders is not likeable, much less trustworthy - IMO.

Unfortunately, I misspelled his last name. It should read "Pimentel."

Thanks for your report. Sounds like there was a great turn-out. Wish I could have been there. Will look forward to reading more about the debate.

Heard that this debate will be televised at a later date, but I don't know when or on what channel.

Thank you for this report.

Allow me to indulge in a slight ad hominem attack on the Pimental fellow. That is to say, IMHO, many Latinos, especially Mexicans, take any attempt to control our borders as a racial attack upon "their people" and some sort of de facto expression of white, protestant aversion to "foreigners."

I won't even deny that the growing "Border Control" movement DOES attract the odd racist, or even two. However, this is far from the main event. As hard as it is for anyone left-of-center to admit, even a racist can be right, even if for the wrong reasons.

At this point in the Disaster on the Border I would settle for the same control over our border with Mexico that the Mexicans exert on their border with Belize and Guatemala. I would like us to control illegal aliens from any land with the same thoroughness and zeal the Mexican Government, uncharacteristically, displays with their efforts against foreigners even temporarily in residence in Mexico for other than touristic reasons.

Furthermore, when it comes to racism, the Mexicans themselves are certainly not above reproach. If one looks at their TV, one can easily see that they portray themselves as racial types which might look more at home in Norway or Milan, rather than in Chiapas. There are no 5', mahogany-colored Indians on their soap operas.

The Border-Erasers have been wickedly clever in identifying their cause, which is the de facto return of the Southwest to Mexican sovereignty, or failing that the latinization of the entire US, with the Civil Rights Movement based on skin color. It's no surprise, the homosexuals are attempting ... and succeeding ... in the same strategy. The Clever Left has merely adopted a successful set of tools to bamboozle the Stupid Right into feeling guilty.

Those who wish to change our laws of citizenship, residence, and border control are welcome to do so through the normal channels open to citizens. Aliens, legal or illegal, have no place in the debate. The Republicans should urge obedience to present law and see that the left gets its God-given opportunity to be voted down on this issue.

The Pimentel-type people are suceeding in bringing this to an emotional playing field, not a rational one.

Thanks for the ping.

I also notice that the only 5', mahogany-colored Indians I see anywhere on Univision are the snaggle-toothed peasants staring wide-eyed from the audience. The camera seems to take delight in displaying their oddities.

Quite a contrast to all the rest of the blondhaired, lite-skinned decendents from Spain.

Thanks for posting your take on this debate. Unfortunately, I wan't able to attend, but was anticipating a successful turnout, which it sounds like it was. Michelle is awesome, she speaks for many.

Looking forward to your report in detail.

Have you noticed that their has been no media coverage on the debate.

The Republic had it's own man there and has printed nothing in three days.

The East Valley Tribune had a reporter there and they have had no story in three days either.

The Sonoran News should have a story tomorrow, as they help host the event.

Yeah, Ricardo didn't even comment in his column, and I did email him the link, so he could refute anything I might have put up.

He did write back thanking me for letting him know I had something up on the web about the debate, though.

I left right after the debate, as the wife is about to pop out my third child.

Congratulations! Did she pop yet?
I really wanted to go to this debate, but I had to stay home and take care of my wife. She was ordered to stay on bed rest.
