Husband of missing Modesto woman lied about girlfriend, family says

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The husband of a missing pregnant woman may have lied about his relationship with a girlfriend and possibly other things, a spokeswoman for the family said Friday.

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for relatives of Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto, said police have shown the family recent photographs of Scott Peterson with a girlfriend. The husband had previously denied such a relationship, the family said.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," Petersen said.

"Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him," Petersen said.

"The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen said. "Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve. She is due to deliver a baby boy on Feb. 10. Her husband told investigators he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve morning.

Police did not indicate to the family if investigators believed Scott Peterson was responsible for his wife's disappearance, according to Petersen.

"The family knows that the police are doing their job," Petersen said. "They don't want to do anything that can hurt their chances of finding Laci."

Petersen, executive director of the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, which is sponsoring a reward for Laci Peterson's safe return, said the Modesto center closed Thursday.

Volunteers also canceled plans to open a one-day center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Although Laci has not been located yet, our search effort will not stop," said Brad Saltzman, general manager of the Red Lion Hotel in Modesto, who had been organizing the volunteer centers. "We will continue to search for Laci and her baby boy."

Police have repeatedly said Scott Peterson is not a suspect but has been less than cooperative.

It is my understanding that in CA as well as most other states a convicted killer of an individual cannot profit directly from that death. Her parents and siblings would be the heirs if SP is convicted. Does that sound right?

Here's a map of San Luis Reservoir. Lots of nooks and crannies to take a boat into to dump a body. Can't imagine there was much traffic there on a cold, Christmas Eve morning. Maybe if they can corroborate the trucker's story they could take the water search dogs there?

Why thank you,(takes bow) actually I know about the GPS from quizzing some trucker friends about it's uses and the possibility of using the system in the cases missing adults where a visual description/ licence plate of car is known.

I think Rita Cosby did ask Scott's dad about the "other woman."

Scott's dad (by phone) was interviewed, and the Modesto mayor and a gentleman from the Red Lion hotel. At this point, all questions and answers were predictable.

Later in the show, she had the National Enquirer guy. At this point, she had already finished up with Scott's dad. But he called back! He wanted to give the NE guy a piece of his mind, and did. The NE guy said he understood, and was polite about it.

On that second call, Rita said, "Mr. Peterson, what about the pictures of Scott recently dancing with a woman who was not his wife?" Mr. Peterson said something to the effect that Scott and Laci went to a lot of parties. He implied that it was just a party at which Scott danced with someone else. He did not get to the issue of whether or not Laci was at the party, or whether Laci knew Scott was attending this formal affair, dancing with someone else.

I have heard that at the party in question, Laci was not present, and at the time of the party, she supposedly thought Scott was out of town on business. (Which he may have been...regular business AND monkey business.)

I wonder if this formal affair Scott where was dancing with the other woman was business function of hers? This is a lame excuse by Scott's parents, that he and Laci went to a lot of parties. Anyone who was at that same party can confirm if they were there together. If it was her office Christmas party, which could be easily confirmed by her co-workers, even his parents would have a hard time explaining that one.

SP is being called a liar by Fuhrman, Geraldo, Batten and another "expert". Forensic evidence is being analyzed. Lame alibi, no witnesses to alibi, they paint a grim picture. If SP is taking all this in, he won't stop in LA, IMO.

Listen to what Geraldo asks Fuhrman (I heard the earlier show)--he tells Fuhrman he should investigate this! Fuhrman sounds very interested!

That case was especially sad because even with the make and licence plate # of the car known plus the fact that the Wal-Mart parking lot camera had captured the carjacking. It was almost impossible to motivate the local PD to search or relese a BOLO. Two escaped convicts were found in possession of the car I don't belive she has ever been found...

Not exactly 80 miles from Modesto but I remember going to this lake back in 1975. It was so hot that summer we just sat in the lake with a million tadpoles swarming all over us. When we couldn't stand the tadpoles anymore we spent the time driving in our airconditioned car. Some vacation. :-)

LAKE MCCLURE is located just southeast of Lake Don Pedro. In fact these two lakes come within about a couple of miles of each other. Highway 132 divides the two lakes. Lake McClure, like Don Pedro, has many long arms. One arm during some years extends all the way past the Bagby Recreation area. Fishing is supposed to be excellent on this lake.
