Husband of missing Modesto woman lied about girlfriend, family says

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The husband of a missing pregnant woman may have lied about his relationship with a girlfriend and possibly other things, a spokeswoman for the family said Friday.

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for relatives of Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto, said police have shown the family recent photographs of Scott Peterson with a girlfriend. The husband had previously denied such a relationship, the family said.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," Petersen said.

"Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him," Petersen said.

"The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen said. "Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve. She is due to deliver a baby boy on Feb. 10. Her husband told investigators he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve morning.

Police did not indicate to the family if investigators believed Scott Peterson was responsible for his wife's disappearance, according to Petersen.

"The family knows that the police are doing their job," Petersen said. "They don't want to do anything that can hurt their chances of finding Laci."

Petersen, executive director of the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, which is sponsoring a reward for Laci Peterson's safe return, said the Modesto center closed Thursday.

Volunteers also canceled plans to open a one-day center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Although Laci has not been located yet, our search effort will not stop," said Brad Saltzman, general manager of the Red Lion Hotel in Modesto, who had been organizing the volunteer centers. "We will continue to search for Laci and her baby boy."

Police have repeatedly said Scott Peterson is not a suspect but has been less than cooperative.

Gary Condit would make the perfect president for this new 501-3C. I understand he is available now that Chandra has been found.

His connections in, and knowledge of the area, its people, and its biker criminal element are absolutely peccable.

But you know setting up a foundation like this costs money. So send Scotty and Gary a couple of bucks, if you can spare it.

Yesterday or the day before I read on one of these threads that a freeper went to the Berkely Marina and noticed that the parking ticket dispenser issues tickets that are dated one day ahead. Has anyone coroborrated this? If this is true then SP has a ticket for the 23rd and not the 24th. I think this find, if true, is pretty relevant. Did anyone else catch this?

I wish someone would be there tomorrow disguise as Laci. That would wipe that smile off his mug.

Wait, wait!

I have no sympathy for Scott, and in fact I think he did this to Laci and the baby. Just my opinion, I have no personal knowledge of him or of the case.

But the way I read it was this: when Kristin Smart disappeared, the police sent letters to all the students at the college, asking anyone who could help to come forward. I read it as, his was only one of thousands of letters--and he didn't respond, but I imagine there were numerous others who didn't respond. And maybe he and the others didn't answer the form letter because they had no information to offer.

Thanks! I took that picture last year with my Canon RebelG and true black & white 35 mm film.

"Kuykendall - a huge name in NW. Houston. Wonder if there's a connection?"

not sure if he was in Houston. He always pronounced his name "KURR-KEN-DAL"

I actually never asked him what agency he was with, but he talked about the time they switched to .41 magnums...if thats any clue.

The Trucker pulled up along side of SP (remember he knew the vehicle from past trips on this highway) peering into the vehicle trying to make eye contact to let him know he didn"t appreciate his driving abilitys, he noticed a young female in the passenger seat, according to the witness she was slumped over with her hair in her face. All the times prior to seeing this vehicle the trucker said he never observed a passenger.

Is there anyway of finding out if this Trucker saw him in the wee early hours of the morning Christmas Eve? Like when it was still dark.

I can't imagine if it was daylight, Scott would have put his dead wife in the car sitting next to him. Unless maybe she was alive and they both left together and an argument took place and he hit her over the head there in the car and killed her.

anyone remember the scene in "Take the Money and Run" where woody allen (yeah, I know...) was locked in the sweat box for 2 days with an insurance salesman as punishment for trying to escape from a chain gang?

"KURR-KEN-DAL" Yep. Same here! In fact, there's a major artery by that name. I'd bet dollars to donuts there's a connection! I have no idea about the gun thing though.

Is there any way you could contact him and ask??

a freeper went to the Berkely Marina and noticed that the parking ticket dispenser issues tickets

If I remember correctly he/she lost the $5. and the machine did not issue a ticket.

No, but I've been to England twice, once to London on a vacation package and the last time to a little village outside Norwich, to visit a relative who was working in the area temporarily. I love it there, except riding in the car really freaked me out, and the separate hot and cold water taps are a pain...What part are you from?

I agree with you--that they deliberately spoke of Scott in connection with the missing Kristin Smart, solely to pressure him more. I heard Modesto PD is also looking at their other missing women cases, with Scott in mind, just to see if there might be a link.

It all sounds like just more pressure. Just a tactic to push him into a corner on the Laci case.
