Church's sign has Muslims outraged

Florida pastor says criticism of Islam is legal and fair

Associated Press Friday, January 17, 2003

Jacksonville --- The Council on American-Islamic Relations-Florida is calling on state religious leaders to repudiate a Jacksonville Baptist church's roadside sign the group claims is anti-Muslim.

The sign outside the First Conservative Baptist Church in Jacksonville's Mandarin area reads: ''Jesus Forbade Murder. Matthew 26:52. Muhammad Approved Murder. Surah 8:65.''

Altaf Ali, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Florida, said his organization attempted to talk with the Baptist church's officials about the sign, but were rebuffed with belligerent language.

''All Americans must band together to condemn hate speech designed to divide our nation along religious and ethnic lines,'' Ali said. ''Any attempt to marginalize or vilify one religious community is an attack on all people of faith.''

The church's pastor, the Rev. Gene Youngblood, who also leads the Conservative Theological Society and Conservative Christian Academy, said he has been using the marquee-type sign to express the church's opinion for 15 years and has no plans to remove the message.

''First and foremost, are we not entitled to freedom of speech?'' Youngblood said.

Youngblood, who said he is an expert on world religions, said he had been threatened and his property vandalized. He said he has filed 13 police reports since July.

Youngblood said his church would issue a formal statement later.

Iman Zaid Malik, spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida, said some Christian friends brought the offensive sign to his attention.

''Misinformation must be rejected by all people of conscience,'' Malik said. ''This shows that the vast majority of Americans reject hate and seek a society where good overcomes the evil.''

Malik said the Quran verse indicates that those who believe and are steadfast in battle will overcome much larger armies. It is not an endorsement of murder, he said.

The verse reads: ''O Prophet [Muhammad]! Inspire the believers to conquer all fear of death when fighting, [so that] if there be twenty of you who are patient in adversity, they might overcome two hundred; and if there be one hundred of you, they might overcome one-thousand of those bent on denying the truth, because they are people who cannot grasp it.''

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the Quran also states, ''whoever murders a person . . . it will be as if he killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life, shall be regarded as if he saved all mankind.''

So it's just that simple? My 4-year-old Muslim neighbor is a terrorist?

Islam is all about murdering innocent people. What the hell do you think happened on 9/11?

Nineteen fanatics supported by maybe several hundred more terrorists and sympathizers, out of tens of millions of Muslims, plotted and carried out an attack on America.

I think they have to get em old enough to indoctrinate them into believing that they get to go be with Alah and get their 72 virgins. I don't think a 4 year old is ready yet. Give him a while.

I sure hope you were smart enough not to have kids. The gene pool is polluted enough as it is.

And like you would notice if one did? Why risk your life and that of your family to denounce terrorism when idiots like you are going to condemn them as being one big terrorist family anyway.

you got that right. moslims were dancing in the streets in joy on 9/11 when they saw the buildings colapse. but your friends in the media quickly pulled those images so that you could obfuscate the lack of humanity in the muslim faith...

so the fact that they do not rise up is your evidence that they do not support terrorist. that's just a wee bit weard if you ask me but then coming from someone that supports a religion of murder cannot be expected to think clearly...

syriacue: But no fatwa was declared against those involved in "the Last Temptation of Christ."

Dave S: No, just against abortion doctors.

But no fatwa was declared against those involved in "the Last Temptation of Christ." providing abortions.

(Unless the Muslim clerics issued one).

Excellent study of Islam, for those who can't seem to believe their lying eyes as to Islam's world wide aggression.

Isnt it amazing how these people can dissociate themselves from the Old Testament as though it never existed and the God of the Old Testament is someone else

The Law of God, as expressed in the Old Testament, is not the same as God's particular directives to particular Jews in the Old Testament.

"For example, there are religous groups in the southern US who feel that drinking is wrong, therefore YOU can't buy beer at the store, to drink at home. Pornography is wrong, therefore YOU can't have the option of watching or reading Playboy. The general rule is that I am too stupid to know how to live, but they are so self-righeous in their beliefs, that they will force me to live by their beliefs; whether I like it or not. Does this sound familiar?"
Who says you can't? God gave us our "free will" to do what we want. He also says there's consequences to the choices we make. Does somebody have a gun to your head telling you you can't do these things? I think not.

You know, Dave, you really annoy me. I am a christian and am vehemently opposed to abortion. I DO NOT condone violence in the name of God. I can hate what they do, but I can't hate them. People (christians) who inflict harm or death to those who perform abortions, in my opinion, are more than likely charlatans. "You will know them by their fruits". And as one poster said earlier in this thread, actions speak louder than words.

Actually, yes. We have blue laws in the South, with different degrees of alcohol restriction.

There are counties where no alcohol can be sold,
there are counties where no alcohol can be sold on Sundays, and
there are counties where no alcohol can be sold on Sunday mornings.

Why not go to the book store and buy them. On my last trip to Barns and Noble they had 6(SIX) different translations available.
If you don't want to buy, write down the reference given here and visit the book store and compare them.
Libraries aren't out of style either!

Try a used book store. I found a koran in Arabic in Tulsa Ok several years ago. I didn't buy it as I don't speak it. I use the Tahrike Tarsile Qur"an translated by M. H. Shakir because it was the cheapest I could find.
