Recent history has proven that diversity can be achieved without using quotas.

That's part of why we elected him our President, and I'm proud of it!

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

"Schools should seek diversity by considering a broad range of factors in admissions, including a student's potential and life experiences."

Oh, Great.
Statements like this if in the Brief will muddy the water further. Because universities want to keep on doing the same racial discrimination they have been doing they will then just adopt "racially neutral life experiences" tests to achieve "diversity"

Extra points on admission to be given for :
knowledge of music- sample question-Compare and Contrast East Coast and West Coast Rap "artists"

Knowledge of marketing- "Rank in price order fifteen models of Nike footwear"

Modern language- "Write a sentence in Ebonics"

Then years from now the then President will be hemmed in in future Supreme Court Cases attacking this racial discrimination- "Yo Bro, the Court gave what Pres Bush asked for."

When I read this:

Our government must work to make college more affordable for students who come from economically disadvantaged homes. And because we're committed to racial justice, we must make sure that America's public schools offer a quality education to every child from every background, which is the central purpose of the education reforms I signed last year.

I see this:

Government must continue to market itself as the sole solution for society's problems and we must continue to offer federal scholarships, paid for by overtaxed high income earners, to children from families who choose not to encourage their children to study hard to get academic scholarships. We must continue to kowtow to the NEA so that government schools will never improve the quality of education for our most precious thing in life, our children. We must continue to make sure that America's government indoctrination centers continue to push the propaganda to our children, when they are most vulnerable, which is why I decided to sign the bloating education reform package cleverly disguised as "Leave no Child Behind".

Thanks for posting... Look for disenchantment with some of the words he chose to use. It's almost impossible to please all...... But this is a good start in getting away from full blown quotas...

And here is Bush's speech on this Michigan case, ohioWfan. Boy, he sure doesn't beat around the bush on this one. Gets right to the point.

Excellent.

Systems in California and Florida and Texas have proven that by guaranteeing admissions to the top students from high schools throughout the state, including low income neighborhoods, colleges can attain broad racial diversity.

In other words, you can use demographic statistics to discriminate, but you can't do it directly. Well George, that view is better than the U of Michigan/Ted Kennedy view, but it isn't straight meritocracy, either. I suppose its the best we can do in these degenerate times.

We should not be satisfied with the current numbers of minorities on Americans college campuses. Much progress has been made; much more is needed.

By the time kids are coming out of high school, it's a little late to give them an extra boost. "Affirmative action" should mean an increased focus on learning in grade school and middle school. Get rid of the left-wing PC crap. Get rid of bad teachers, and move bad students into special classes where they won't disrupt the good kids. Get rid of bad principals! If they won't back up their teachers, they should be removed. Make it much more difficult for kids to sue their teachers. Push learning and knowledge instead of PC relativism and tolerance. Tolerance is well and good, but it should not be at the core of the curricula, it should be far off on the periphery. LEARNING should be at the core of the curricula.

As a high school honors student who applied to Michigan, was put on the waiting list, and then not accepted, despite my 3.7 GPA and score of 29 on my ACT, I am glad something is finally being done about this.

Good for President Bush! Now, whether or not this will come to pass, is another story.

My daughter graduated from the UofM Dearborn campus with a GPA of 3.8. She applied to UofM Ann Arbor law school and was sent a letter: "SORRY, we have to meet our quota; please try again next year!" Upon researching, you only need a GPA of 3.5 to get into the law school, but if you are a minority, (sorry) you only need a GPA of 2.5!

(She has since graduated from 'someplace else' and passed the bar last spring.) :)

I had low expectations after the 2000 elections.
I expected Dubya to be the frat boy the media made him out to be.
Today I see him as a great leader of men.
God has blessed America with a President who is truly guided by deep morality and vision.

...we must make sure that America's public schools offer a quality education to every child from every background, which is the central purpose of the education reforms I signed last year.

This is the crux of the whole matter. If the public schools in the inner cities would just perform and arm those students with a decent education we wouldn't need affirmative action in the first place. It is my opinion that affirmative action is only in place to make up for the total failure of elementary and secondary education in the black and poorer communities. Now, W needs to come out and offer vouchers in the cities. Then, we might really get somewhere.

Our Constitution makes it clear that people of all races must be treated equally under the law. Yet we know that our society has not fully achieved that ideal.

Our society never will achieve that ideal, as long as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, et. al. have anything to say about it.

Those race mongers, by their actions and words, trample the legendary "dream" of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the dream where someday, people are not judged by the color of their skin. In truth, race is everything to them. Oh, they'll rant and rave and feign righteous indignation while they make their self-serving MLK Day speeches, and claim his spirit "lives on" in them, and tell us how they'll "fight" to bring his dream to fruition.

In fact, the last thing the race mongers want, is for his dream to become reality.
