AA in university admissions is misguided because it pretends to solve a non-existent problem (discrimination against blacks). Blacks don't come to the the university with lower qualifications because they were discriminated against, but rather because they didn't prepare themslves in K-12 and local community college, where cost isn't an issue. BTW, even Asians prepare themselves in the same crummy schools blacks attend.

Really, it is all in how you sell that moral imperaive. If you do it right, you're in very good shape. You can even sell it to the folks who will take a hit - because most folks want to do the right thing.

In this case, the timing is also big - and the speech and the timing is a major CALCULATED RISK. I think it is likely to draw them into attacking Bush - and they might call this a rollback of civil rights.

Which I think, is what Rove wants them to do. I think we could be reaching a point where Bush, at some point, could literally say, "The noble goals of Dr. King have been hijacked by people who have forgotten the essential truth that two wrongs do not make a right."

Literally, that is what they're ready for - and you can bet that they would have picke dthis fight unless they knew they had a very good chance of doing a LOT more damage to the Dems and the Left than would be done on this issue alone.

It is huge, and politically very risky...

I'm not so sure its all that risky. Yeah, they'll whine and cry like the babies they are, but....most black people don't vote Republican and probably never will no matter what the Republicans do or say. There are people who vote democrat who, if they really examine their principles, might not vote democrat. There are lots of people in the organized labor movement that have been reverse discriminated against in recent years by their own union representation as just one example. Who really cares what the swimmer (aka Teddy Kennedy) or Tommy Dashole say. They are in permanent attack mode against not only the elected Republicans, but against all Americans in general. Screw them, let's get it on.

Black
Native American
etc.

They could save a lot of paper and ink by just saying, "20 demerits if you're a white guy." That wouldn't be politically correct, but it would be truthful.
