Incredibly talented producer and writer....the "musician" behind the magic.

The Bee Gees were incredibly sophisticated in their approach to songwriting. Yet, as with all great songwriting, it's deceptively simple and accessable.

I'm terribly sad at this news.

Sad. The first album I ever received was the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever (I was about three at the time). I still have the record (on old RSO records), as well as the CD. I guess it was fate that I would eventually move to the neighborhood where that movie was filmed.

The Bee Gees were, of course, more than SNF. Later on, my dad would play their stuff from the late 1960s/early 70s. I still LOVE "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "Words" and "Massachusetts." Great songwriters. I was always impressed that through thick and thin, the brothers never broke into that petty BS that often comes between family members, at least for a long period of time.

As a member of the Bee Gees, with world-wide record sales exceeding 110 million, Maurice Gibb enjoyed a place among the top five of the most successful recording artistes of all time, along with The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson and Sir Paul McCartney.

I wouldn't laugh at that comment. I think Bee Gees, at times, rose to the level and surpassed Lennon and McCartney.

Were they as socially important? No.
In terms of pure songwriting? Without a doubt.

I'd even argue that Lennon/McCartney were a whole lot less "socially important" than they and others thought, really..

Re: I can't believe it!

I just heard the news on the bbc website that he had died.

I am stunned beyond belief. To me the Bee Gees were more enduring than any other band - I cannot believe that Maurice has gone, and at such young age. A sad, sad loss.

What a lucky thing that Robin just made it to say his goodbyes to his brother.

Rest in Peace.

Mark

I remember back in the late seventies, it seemed that every song on the radio had either the Bee Gees or Michael McDonald singing in the background.

They covered alot genres in the pop field!!!

If you really wanna be knocked out, take a listen to Andy Gibbs greatest hits (essentially the Bee Gees).

It's a treasure trove of staggeringly sophisticated pop. It's in my "Desert Isle" disk top 10!!!

May he rest in peace. Prayers to his family.

Our useless media made it sound like he was out of the woods. I guess if it isn't liberal slant, there are only a few journalist who can report a real news story with all of the facts.
