I wouldn't laugh at that comment. I think Bee Gees, at times, rose to the level and surpassed Lennon and McCartney.

Were they as socially important? No.
In terms of pure songwriting? Without a doubt.

I'd even argue that Lennon/McCartney were a whole lot less "socially important" than they and others thought, really..

I, as well. Who could forget "I started a Joke" or "Words" ?

They also donated the rights to the song "Nobody gets too much Heaven" to, I believe, UNICEF, and challenged other singers to donate something from their portfolios.
